april

@april@a.softer.network

I ride strange bicycles, spend way too much time reading, etc..

Also me:
@kg6gfq - Primary account for posting about bikes, DIY/repair, crafts, reading, and some trans stuff
@fern - Alt for more personal thoughts & a quieter timeline where I can actually keep up with everyone's posts

This account seems to be serving a similar purpose to fern@octodon, except over here I mostly talk to people who use *key because of emoji reactions. At some point I might merge this account with fern@octodon; we'll see.

april,

@melerva Redpilled Chef: a cooking competition reality tv show... that is also a trans allegory?

I find it kinda funny that our major advisor at uni uses Discord of all things for official communications. Most of the EET faculty have discord accounts because of this

april,

@ChloeCat I remember being pleased, back when I was in university, that people seemed to be moving away from closed software (e.g. "final papers must be submitted in Microsoft Word format").

Perhaps I was a bit optimistic...

Shoutout to @april for being the best damn proofreader I've ever seen

RE: https://a.softer.network/notes/9re4r0ojtzyx0pa2

april,

@melerva Aw, thanks! 😊

muttering I'm catching up, I'm catching up...

In all seriousness, though: Thank you. I'm glad the notes are helpful!

And thank you for writing, too. I really like this book and I am having so much fun reading it.

melerva, to random

Alright, I'm cooking empanadas, running gnorp, and gonna read over my book to see what's worth changing

april,

@melerva aaaah you're still going faster than I can make notes

I am both frantic and thrilled

(OK, only a little frantic and mostly for dramatic effect)

april,

@melerva I'll send you PDFs of my raw incomprehensible scribbles on 9 and 10 and you can try to make sense of them if you feel like it. Otherwise you can wait a day or two until I read more, review, and type up everything.

april,

@melerva Finally caught up last night and started on typed notes. Ch. 9 sent; it does include some things that aren't in the scribbles.

april, to random

Hey @ChloeCat and @ielenia, I hope you both have a good first day of the new term!

melerva, to random

if i ever wrote a ransom note it would be really obvious because of words like "whom" "thereby" and "hence"

april,

@melerva I don't know about the vocabulary but if they're just analyzing it based on semicolon usage they might bring me in as a suspect too.

april,

@ChloeCat @melerva Wow. I guess I really haven't been coding much lately; it took me a minute to get that.

melerva, to random

Well, the job I thought I was starting today fell apart but that just means I won't risk burnout when I accept the other one soon

april,

@melerva That sounds like it could be disappointing but "lower burnout risk" sounds excellent!

april,

@melerva That's an excellent outcome!

melerva, to random

I got a full 5 hours and I'm still up when I usually am

the power of going to sleep at 8 PM

april,

@melerva Good (early) morning!

I, meanwhile, am about to go to bed at a halfway reasonable hour.

Goodnight!

chapter 11

april,

@melerva I was about to say that you're on a roll, writing these faster than I've had time to read them!

april, to random

I've kept this account mostly separate from my primary, since this one has turned out to mostly just be for chatting with friends and I don't necessarily like to do that from an account that's followed by a bunch of random people who followed my primary because they think solarbikes are interesting.

Increasingly, though, there's overlap - mostly trans community overlap - and it's simultaneously weird and neat when I see someone I get a react notification and recognize the person because I follow them on main, or when someone I follow on main is replying to someone I mostly associate with this account.

It's not bad - good, if anything - just feels odd.

ChloeCat, to random

now i have canalave city stuck in my head.... thanks, Jan

april,

@ChloeCat Wow. Your brain music is a lot more complicated than my brain music. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise, though.

melerva, to random

one time i drove so wildly that I got a golf cart stuck under a fence without moving the fence

i also later got run over by it while it was parked

april,

@melerva @Rachel @ChloeCat One of the reasons I don't drive is because I'm afraid that if I did I would have stories like these.

(I have very few stories like these about cycling so I guess that's reassuring, but still...)

melerva, to random

it really depends on the system but most of the time you should just treat headmates like different people and it's totally fine to only be friends with a subset of them (or even just one)

april,

@melerva Huh. This same idea came up in conversation with my partner last night.

april, to random

Well, if I have to do weed-whacking at least I get to use my preferred tool for it: A big serrated blade on a stick.

It's quiet, low-maintenance, and good exercise. A+ would use again. (And will have to, because it's slow and I only finished about 1/8 of the area I need to do.)

ChloeCat, to random

It has been three hours... there is still no end in sight

april,

@ChloeCat That sounds exceedingly frustrating!

melerva, to random

As an asexual I frequently wonder if everyone would be asexual if they got all their needs for touch and love and affection satisfied

but that's probably just a thing for asexuals

and now I have to wonder how many hypersexuals are only like that because they crave affection, and they'd stop being that way if someone treated them like human beings

april,

@melerva I rather like this notion, but I do wonder if maybe the causal relationship is the other way around and there's also an element of "we find each other, even without knowing." I've seen people describe that phenomenon with neurodivergence, queerness generally, and several specific queer identities. I don't think I've heard it described for aceness before, but it seems plausible?

april, to random

I should try to sleep as of several hours ago. It would be the responsible thing to do.

In lieu of effective time travel, I guess I'll go to bed now.

ChloeCat, to random

On a break at work (finally), and sometimes 30 minutes is not enough to recover from what just happened.

april,

@ChloeCat Oh dear. I hope you get more recovery time soon, whatever it's from.

turns to the north and sends positive thoughts

melerva, to random

Forgot a poll option so added it

RE: https://a.softer.network/notes/9r6it0cgtzyx0frb

april,

@melerva Oh, good. I knew there was something missing from the original poll but wasn't sure how to articulate it.

april, to random

You know what I love about friends-of-friends? They make my friends happier. Often when I have no idea how to do so. It's really quite wonderful.

ChloeCat, to random

Jumping off a four-storey roof was not the most impulsive thing Yana had ever done, but as Dane twisted in her arms and began to weave a lattice of crystals beneath him, the thought crossed her mind that perhaps she should refrain from such activities in the future.

This book is great

april,

@melerva @ChloeCat Ok yeah that sounds right. (well, you should know, I suppose)
