So I was looking at Ruby on Rails (RoR) due to something. Isn't it dangerous to keep building your product on this (e.g. GitLab, Mastodon)?

The major RoR maintainers (3) seem to be all from Shopify by this point.

Ruby is dropping more and more on language popularity charts and is hardly picked by people to learning coding with. The pool to be able to fish developers from is rapidly slinking. Heck, Lua is more popular when it comes to new people learning the language.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

Not a dig against the language or the tool, but if I was a product owner or doing hiring, I'd be very concerned.

It won't immediately be a problem, but contrast with C/C++, C#, Java numbers, it's just steadily collapsing. And that's ignoring the Python elephant in the room.

Another big Ruby using example is Puppet, contributions to that have also dropped heavily in the past 4 years.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw Ah. Yeah, there's also that aspect of it. Had conveniently blocked that I think. 😅

@pervognsen Oooh, good one. I should load my current games and save them again.

Yeah, I hear you. At the same time, I wonder how early some of the new gameplay/fighting mechanics become available, bringing fresh enjoyment for existing fights.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen Good question. Some of the weapons seem like they will be drops in the expansion, but unarmed, for example, seems weird to suddenly get majorly revamped only in the expansion. So uncertain.

TIL nginx can be extended with JavaScript, and I don't know

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@jpmens Just be aware, having jumped through various hoops with it myself recently (messing with JWT), there are various limitations though as it is a restricted subset of JavaScript.

The documentation is also not the best.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@jpmens Let's just say while working with it, I let out a few expletives, yes. :D

Trying to hit all the Danish classics, today I went to the baker several hours before morning opening time and bought some grovbirkes straight from the oven.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen Sounds similar to the loss of boulangeries in France.

In the Netherlands we have a bit of a revival with some more traditional bakers rising up again.

Cool, my upstream Zabbix Ansible PR got merged, making Zabbix script maintenance a little less cumbersome in the future.

New development policy: code generated by a large language model or similar technology (e.g. ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) is presumed to be tainted (i.e. of unclear copyright, not fitting NetBSD's licensing goals) and cannot be committed to NetBSD.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@daniel_collin True, but at least having a policy is something that can be fallen back on in dubious cases?

Huh, looks like Assassin's Creed Shadows seems to contain Yasuke, the African retainer to Oda Nobunaga.

So that's the latter part of the Sengoku period (1580 onwards).

Had a very weird first 24 hours back in Europe until I realized (after noticing this for two different kinds of bottles with screw-off plastic caps) that the plastic caps don't detach anymore from the collar. That's new since last year. EU regulation apparently?

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen Yep! Reducing plastic litter. Also, many countries now having or introducing deposits for small plastic bottles and/or aluminium cans.

In other news, Tetrapaks that moved from just folding to open to plastic caps seem to move back again in at least my country, but possibly others as well?

Sheesh, even Tango Gameworks?

I don't get Microsoft. They piss away more money on things that ultimately never see the light of day, but sure, let's close down a succesful studio.

@pervognsen @Sharlock93 Hi-Fi Rush seemed like the typical game for the platformer and speedrunner crowd. I am sure that that could've been a promotional angle as well.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen @Sharlock93 Ah, I had only seen a few trailers, and it seemed more like a Metroidvania-like platformer over a DmC. But still, solid crowd for that kind of game to play and speedrun. :D

Fucking hilarious:

"Russia warned Britain on Monday that if British weapons were used by Ukraine to strike Russian territory then Moscow could hit back at British military installations and equipment both inside Ukraine and elsewhere."

They pull all kinds of dirty moves themselves and cry foul when the UK effectively tells Ukraine it's okay to punch the bully a bloody nose, back on its own turf.

Fuck you, Putin.

Really stop using MD5 already for passwords.

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@pervognsen I had something like that and fully relied on muscle memory. Apparently one day it failed. Thankfully I had a laptop where I still had a logged in session. Needed to export every entry by hand, nuke the vault, and reimport. So yeah, that sucked. And lessons were learned.

"Todd Howard reckons he knows why Starfield was so divisive: It was too 'different than you've seen from us in past'"

No, Todd, it's because you've stripped yet more from what made these games great and all the systems have barely evolved in all these years. It pales to your previous games in many respects.

I seriously don't get why some people like TOML, but dislike YAML. TOML is such a worse format, and it's especially syntatically noisy.

TIL about the Poison Book Project

It doesn't surprise me though. Emerald green, also known as Schweinfurter, Paris, or Vienna green, is highly toxic due to its chemical makeup:

Cu(C₂H₃O₂)₂·3Cu(AsO₂)₂ - copper (II) acetate triarsenite

Invented in 1814, they even used this pigment to dye candy wrappers in those days.

https://sites.udel.edu/poisonbookproject/

asmodai,
@asmodai@mastodon.social avatar

@peturdainn Haha, fair. Aside from the time period difference, the poison used in Eco's story is most likely a plant-based poison.

Unsure what to think of IBM holding two of the most used configuration management/infrastructure as code tools organisations in their portfolio.

So that really only leaves Pulumi as an indepedent player?
