Ooh I just noticed that the PolicyKit website is much improved—nice work @axz and team! https://policykit.org/

@ntnsndr thanks!! More to be pushed in the coming days and weeks!

@ntnsndr @light I can't see the original message but yes, self-hosting is totally possible!

Also if interested in fully technically decentralized, there is a recent paper just out that removes the need for a governance server and does everything on clients using the MLS protocol: https://james.grimmelmann.net/files/articles/private-hierarchical-governance.pdf

Leijie Wang giving a great talk (with a live demo!) of his no-code authoring system Pika, including grammar, compiler, component library, and form-based UI, for communities to create and carry out a wide range of governance online! https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3613904.3642012

Congrats to Nouran Soliman on a fantastic talk on her best paper awarded work on meronimity (mitigating barriers to engaging in public conversations with partial, self-selected, and verified identity signals)! 👏👏 We also deployed a system for it right here in Mastodon at @LiTweeture a while back 😌 Read the paper here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3613904.3642241 #chi2024

And Emelia Hughes giving her awesome talk! Good questions about novelty effects and possibility of reduced impact of citations or correction interventions over time in relation to systems like Community Notes #chi2024 https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.17218

@kjfeng and Lawrence gave a great talk at #chi2024! Also some really interesting questions from the audience the work brought up - questions of ease and simplicity vs agency tradeoffs, dealing with as-of-yet unknown or revealed preferences, implications for content moderation. https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.14000

It seems obvious that we should prioritize addressing misinformation that is more harmful. But what makes something more likely to be harmful? Can we can reason about it before the harm has occurred?

📣 In an upcoming paper, we present a taxonomy of Misinformation as a Harm ➡️

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

From interviews w fact-checkers from orgs around the world, we learned that while prioritization is a big concern (too much to fact-check, not enough time or resources), triaging is often an ad hoc process. Potential for harm however is indeed a major factor in decision-making.

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

After the interviews and ~2 years of iteration and feedback, we developed the FABLE framework of factors that influence magnitude of misinformation harms, encompassing: social (F)ragmentation, (A)ctionability, (B)elievability, (L)ikelihood of spread, and (E)xploitativeness.

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

We provide a series of questions to help with determining relative values. This can serve as a fuzzy indicator to be used and weighed however people/orgs find appropriate, recognizing that diff groups have diff goals & that people have limited time for investigation.

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

We also discuss avenues for leveraging this framework towards other areas where harms-informed triage is useful (e.g., content moderation), and the possibility for automated tools to help w/ ranking items according to the dimensions or gathering supporting evidence. More coming!

Really enjoyed participating in this workshop on decentralized social media at Princeton a few weeks ago, hosted by our very own @andresmh! Thanks to the students who took notes, you can see the discussion topics and questions here: https://freedom-to-tinker.com/2024/03/19/five-themes-discussed-at-princetons-workshop-on-decentralized-social-media/

I loved the Three Body Problem but never got around to reading the 2nd book (The Dark Forest) until now. It has some okay parts but omg the misogyny is so ridiculously over the top, I felt like I was reading a plot of a shonen anime at times. Ugh….

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

@specter it was so incredibly bad I can’t help now but notice all the biased ways women are depicted in the rest of the series. I’ll still read the third book though.

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

@specter lol I’m most of the way through the third and yeah you weren’t kidding!

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

@specter finished the third book but tbh was speed reading nearer to the end. Yeah imo this book was even worse than the second. So many tropes - true love as infatuation with idealized fantasies of women instead of real people, loner misanthropic average boy becomes hero and is vindicated, women as either snake or angel, women defined mainly by their relationships with men. And that’s not getting into the overtly misogynistic passages.

members, what if we replaced Loomio with a Mastodon bot?

axz,
@axz@hci.social avatar

@ntnsndr no! We’ve been focusing on the new frontend. If you know of any good backend devs who would be interested in taking this on tho, lmk. I should have some funding.

I participated in an interview with a group of fantastic UW scholars of social media for UW News! 🤩 We talk about problems with large, centralized social media and whether the fragmentation we're seeing of today's social media landscape has been beneficial: https://www.washington.edu/news/2023/10/24/better-social-media-research-twitter-bluesky-linkedin-threads/

@socialfutureslab And @kjfeng gave a talk on his collaboration with the C2PA UX task force investigating how end users interpret and react to media provenance indicators embedded in social media, particularly on trust and accuracy. https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3610061 Great job everyone!
