@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

The danger, as Natasha Walter sets out here, is that not only is the repression of protest bad in itself for democracy, it acts to polarise politics - whether this is a cause or effect of recent politics is an interesting issue, but the prosecution of those who peacefully protest punishes the relatively moderate.

The reframing of peaceful protester as violent extremists leaves the field or protest open to real (and really) violent extremists.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 This is a confrontation of moral values, between people lives or the power to take lives.

History keeps damn rhyming.

Last night I opened up YT in a private window, & clicked on an unrelated video to that of the one I had just watched. It was a video on arctic ice melts that turned out to be 100% denialist.

One click & there I was in endless fetid scroll of Jordan Peterson, climate change denial, 'what is woke' explainers, 'lol snowflakes' shorts, Trump propaganda, knife fights, & misogynistic, racist garbage.

Don't tell me Big Tech aren't culpable for the hate out there. They're farming it, on a vast scale.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell@masto.ai avatar

It’s funny I’ve seen the Reuters report on the topic a few months back. I’ve victimized the algorithm enough that I don’t see the AI stuff at all (yet). Steering clear of right wing content seems to go a long way. But it takes a single click for recommendations to go bonkers. One click on something that looked like a joke, and suddenly it’s all gay soft porn, Imma click, “not interested” and it stops.

People should always be the algorithm, platform algorithms are evil.

In case you missed it, major corporations are major contributors to inflation, because they can raise prices with impunity.

Our rejection of anti-trust law has led directly to record profits (just because we can, say CEOs). Can we rekindle the spark?

Always feel a tinge of envy for those so very fluid in written expression. Always a pleasure to read such.

Another snipped of conversation is relevant, as is the original post it is in response to. Singapore experimented with neoliberal policy. They were very hard nosed business like evaluating outcomes.

I would posit it largely because pragmatism > ideology.

I need to have a writing version of what IDE's supply to programmers because my damn ideas are scattered over several .txt documents. I have contesting ideas for specific sections of text.

And I am not proficient in text, just programming.

I am half inclined to just pop open Eclipse for this purpose, but its more than that, I'd like to have a merge view.

I had not known about Obsidian, from a quick glance it looks like the thing. Although I will grind through the TOS first.

#Germany bans Yanis #Varoufakis from entering the country

The German Ministry of the Interior has issued a ban against DiEM25 co-founder Yanis Varoufakis after the police shut down the Palestine Congress that was set to take place in Berlin from April 12 to 14.

This entails not only a ban on entry into Germany, but even a ban on any form of online participation and activity at political events in the country, with the German government going beyond the bounds of authoritarianism.

I no longer consider Florida a republic. The Koch network project has pulled this brick from the edifice of what democracy the US has to offer. It, like Texas and states in their clutches, is openly fascist.

The network purposes to dismantle the republic, brick by brick, and rule on its ashes. They need a quorum of states for this.

They are succeeding.

"United Nations scientists say halving climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 is crucial to stop a rise in temperatures of more than 1.5 Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) that would unleash more extreme weather and heat."

We are SO FAR from cutting emissions in half — we haven't even started to SLOW DOWN. It's insane.

We need to go 10x faster & we're just... not. The cognitive dissonance is maddening.

Most important to understand is generations of business and public policy leaders have been indoctrinated in this shit. Think tech leaders. Think billionaires with all the money in the world to inflict it on everyone else.

This is why I rail on about it being a cancer or a prion and now institutionalized cult. They've been at this for a half century

This is induced / normalized behavioral sociopathy.

It's enjoyed nearly 50 years of institutional primacy and conservatives successfully normalized the broadest elements of its thinking. Its alternatives don't have enough visibility. Without a clear alternative, people won't have anything to move to.

It needs a forceful, public, sharp blow to its reputation.

On the academic side, Steve Keen and Tim Lenton seek to do just that.
