Crypto bros are truly amazing creatures, they should be put into cages, to be observed and studied.

Musk called these people "eco-terrorists", I guess we are in an alternative Final Fantasy 7 timeline.

The moral of the story is every content subscription service will turn into a bloodbath for content creators.

I don’t want to bad mouth industry people on here, but if you watch the recent double fine documentary and how they treated Mr. Booty’s visit or conference call, I think they knew very well how this guy operates:

And episode name for the Xbox head visit?

“Villians of Crunch Mode”.

(Where Schafer explains why he was convinced by Booty on the acquisition, interesting rewatch at this point.)

At some point, of course, you can argue where the recent layoff stemmed from; and I think it wouldn’t happen without MSFT’s CEO and its board of directors, but choosing what to give is likely down to the Xbox leadership, and I think they chose poorly.

Important note: Matt Booty is also the only person on this planet (that I know of), to use “peanut butter on bread” in a negative sense.

Gonna say it out loud here:

  • As western video game publishers struggle with their stock prices and lack of investments, firing people became their go to strategy to make quarterly reports look good.

  • While in the East, companies take advantage of lax labour protection laws and terrible job market to crunch existing workers more.

  • I have lost many colleagues due to crunch, because they were right, this industry are full of men who had internalized crunch culture and sold it as hard work.

Just lost another female team member, because god forbid, she wants to have a life outside of work, and not be looked upon by others like she hasn’t given her full attention to the project.

I fear there are many more good people to be lost this year.

Did any acquisition in the game industry of the past 5 years actually worked out for the better?

@gorlak god bless them with their 300 mil $ adventure, I am a bit unsure how many of these Sony agree to fund.

question: we all know blend mode might disable early z on TBDR, but which combinations does that? does something like “blend one zero, one one” disable early z?

There is one very important takeaway in this John Oliver clip, that was cut from the TikTok screen grab version that’s recently shared on Fediverse:

  • Protests are messy, and you cannot expect everyone to behave uniformly;

  • When a protest is organized, opponents will say they are “orchestrated”;

  • When not, opponents will call them “rioters”;

  • So judge the larger cause, and don’t let incidents undermine the cause.

Speaking as a history observer, I can tell you this “outside influence” theory cuts both ways:

  • Tankies say HK protestors are CIA funded, professional rioters because of police crashes; while in reality a million citizens came out peacefully, what happened was situation deteriorated over months due to hardline government responses.
bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar
  • Neocons/Trumpists say US college encampments are socialists, antisemitists, professional outside agitators because of a few counter protest crashes; while in reality students are expressing global solidarity, knowing that Israel is going into Rafah without consequences, and they must hold this government accountable.

  • It certainly doesn’t help that there are famous examples of foreign agent conspiracies in modern history.

  • But to lean on this narrative is the classic authoritarian move.

  • Whatever political spectrum you are on: Don’t be that guy.

Elon Musk “hardcore” work schedule, or what we called, a normal crunch day around project deadline.

Listening to this episode and find the “America First” narrative super effective against some swing voters.

When the living cost is high, the “working with poorer countries means they are dragging us down” narrative continues to be persuasive to voters, that’s a huge problem in modern democracy.

Hot take: every custom engine is better than Unreal, Unity, or Godot, because it is written to serve a specific game.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dphrygian only if you control the custom engine and its usage, in large corporation they end up serving multiple projects and you are back to square 1 (often less flexible/usable than commercial alternatives).

Bleh, the simple sample project I want to ship with LayerProcGen has started frequently crashing when exiting Play Mode. It's because I dispose the NativeArrays it uses on Application.quitting to avoid leaks, but some of the generation threads are still accessing the arrays, despite calling Thread.Abort() on them. For unpredictable reasons it doesn't cause issue in my own game.

I've tried a few fixes that didn't work, and I think I just don't know how to fix it properly.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision also you should be able to terminate long running threads, are they real threads or ECS workers? If you have very long running single thread worker perhaps you can refactor it into something that process in chunks.

bitinn,
@bitinn@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@runevision I will have to look it up, how do you expect users to quit?
