It’s entirely possible they still do, but I can confirm in the early 90’s they sold T-shirts that said “I got crabs from Dirty Dicks.”

Yep. Venereal parasite-themed seafood restaurants are what makes America special.

That’s a question worth a google search but I have no idea how to phrase it.

Just have to ask, what’s up with that outlet?

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Okay, from the picture it looked like the plate was missing or it had a landlord special paint job or something.

I’m designing a dining room cupboard/hutch and looking around the internet for pictures to draw from I started noticing details about them, like how I can give you a checklist of things that will be on them in pictures on the internet, and if there is an outlet visible in the shot it will somehow be negligently built/maintained.

I think I could name 20 legitimately great games that came out for the N64…and that is about it.

You know the NES and SNES minis they released that were basically ARM-powered emulator boxes in nostalgic shells with actually pretty good replica controllers? There was a lot of discussion around what games should have been included that weren’t. Like, “Here’s 25 MORE games that should have been on it.” and a lot of them were third party titles from Squaresoft, Enix, Quintet, Capcom etc. that people think of as iconic to the platform but Nintendo couldn’t wangle the rights for.

Those same discussions often drifted to a hypothetical N64 mini and what list of 25 games it should include and a lot of people struggled to finish that list. Especially if you rule out a lot of the third party publishers and basically go with Nintendo and Rare, which I would add Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Tooie, Majora’s Mask and Star Fox 64 to your list there and that’s basically it. You’d have to start putting things like Pilot Wings 64 on it. No Extreme-G, no 1080 Snowboarding, no Cruisin’ USA, and you’d never get the license for Shadows of the Empire or…whichever Mortal Kombat the system got.

I did once hear a theory as to why the N64 is publicly beloved in a way the Playstation isn’t, it’s because the kids who had an N64 all basically had the same library of games, we can ALL hum the song in Dire Dire Docks or Kokiri Forest. There was a huge library for the Playstation so the kids who had that system don’t all have the same memories.

I have not experienced what you are talking about; “baggy clothes with graphic tees” describes millennial fashions anyway. I don’t perceive millennials as being particularly negative toward Gen Z, for my part I think the kids are gonna be okay.

Are you from some hyperconservative area, like is the mayor also the town pastor and the county judge?

You know how the Nazis wanted to publish The Lord of the Rings in Germany but had to write Tolkien first to ask if he was jewish? Or that they’re nuclear weapons program was slow because they had to make sure it was white guys who did the science?

It’s that mentality.

The funnier thing is, there aren’t any “Patriot Mobile” cell towers or data centers, basically they’re a racism-themed Cricket Mobile or TracFone, where they rent bandwidth from one of the big three (AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile these days if I understand correctly) but they’re their own retail/customer service setup.

Flight instructor here. It usually takes 5 or 6 flights for students to become comfortable working the startup and shutdown procedures. By the tenth time they climb in the plane I can normally say “okay start up and let’s taxi out” and that’s detailed enough instruction for them.

It takes about 6 to 8 hours of practice flying the plane, from straight and level flight, turns, climbs, descents, slow flight, stalls etc. before I even try letting them land, and then usually another 6 to 8 hours of practice before they can put the airplane down gently more often than not.

Landing a plane isn’t particularly easy.

Becoming a private pilot is a stunningly terrible financial decision.

That “dinky Cessna?” I want you to imagine an 80’s Honda Accord that costs as much as a Lamborghini to buy and maintain, and that’s on top of the $8,000 or so you’ll put into training.

A better financial decision would be to buy a brand new Lexus every time you go out of town.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

All told I paid about $5,000 for my private pilot certificate in the early 2000s, though everything is more expensive and the US dollar is cheaper now. Since you used Euro, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is cheaper in America; we get a lot of commercial pilot students from around the world at places like ERAU.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

One interesting thing: American private pilots are trained in night VFR as a basic requirement, so any American private pilot can fly at night under VFR rules. In other countries, it either requires additional training or they do not allow VFR at night at all and so to fly at night you must be instrument rated.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

What is the value proposition of a modern game console over a PC?

I hope Tesla owners only get themselves killed.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Here you are advocating for the death of people because they purchased a vehicle.

No; I’m expressing the same sentiment that I express for motorcycle riders that refuse to wear a helmet. I really, genuinely don’t care if they beat their brains out on the front bumper of a Hyundai, but I don’t think they get to force a Hyundai driver to hose brains off their car.

Teslas are death traps. Their owners can make that choice for themselves but I don’t think they get to make it for others, which is what they try to do every time they turn on that self-driving feature.

The little USB Image Writer utility that comes with Linux Mint seems to work great for everything but Windows. So I literally never have a problem with it.

Yeah, I’ve seen people riff on xkcd comics before but they usually do a bad job of matching the handwriting/font (I don’t know if Randall hand-letters these or if he types in a handwritey font). It’s often a deliberately bad job, because indicating that they are changing the original is a part of the message/artistic expression. Like when a word is covered with a black bar with white letters in it in a different font, an obvious revision, it’s like hearing a different voice interrupt.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

You know, I think I agree with the spirit of that assertion but not the letter of that assertion.

There are people who are kind of at their limit knowing that on your phone there’s a Facebook app, but you have to use your browser and go to the website on a computer. These folks will hear dial tones and TV static in their heads if you say “secure socket layer” to them. These folks have probably also sat through NordVPN ads and heard words like “secure” and “encrypted” used together, and will probably make understandable mistakes like “how’d someone steal bitcoins? I thought it was encrypted?”

As a small time backyard gardener I can say from experience that 4 plants made more cherry tomatoes than I could reasonably eat. I was giving ziplock bags of cherry tomatoes away to people at work for a couple months. They probably did produce a year’s worth of cherry tomatoes, but they don’t refrigerate or freeze particularly well and they’re not a great choice for making tomato sauce because of their liquid/pulp/skin ratio.

Similarly I’ve found that I can grow a year’s supply of red pepper flakes with a whopping two cayenne plants. The rate at which I consume red pepper flakes, I’m about out by the time this year’s peppers start ripening.

I’m able, in my tiny little garden, to grow more of single kinds of foods than I can reasonably eat. I cannot grow enough to sustain my entire diet; I’d need more land than I own to grow grain.
