You’re basically telling us “if you don’t like it then leave”, and yeah, sure, we’re not hostages here. We chose to be here and we can choose to leave. Leaving is no big deal on its own, I have accounts on other instances. I have the technical skills to start my own instance, just other reasons why I won’t. I could even leave Lemmy altogether and my life would carry on. I’m still commenting here because I’m also stubborn I guess.

My current thought is that people should have a choice over how they experience the fediverse

Absolutely, but note that the if you don’t like it then leave also goes for any other instance, including places like exploding-heads. We’re not proposing to exclude individuals that cannot help being who they are. They are there because they actively choose to be, and stand for whatever is happening there. Again, what is the value in keeping that contact open?

You cannot be a neutral actor, this is impossible. With every decision you make, you’re making a stand, in one way or another, even by inaction. Even if you don’t mean or realize it, you are implicitly standing for the values of the places you’re too afraid to block, over the values of many of your users who are already here, discussing this. You indicate that you can’t admin a community of vulnerable people, but who is vulnerable? Who is not vulnerable? What kind of people are you looking for? If we were to make an instance that curates federation with others, you would call that restricted, but aren’t you actually restricting this place to a specific kind of people?

This is literally the paradox of tolerance.

The condition is clear, and I have stated it. I do not want another instance to create a problem for users minding their own business browsing Locally. If I were to receive many user reports - and I mean reports of specific content - I may also take action even if these are not Local.

What would you consider a problem? What is the kind of specific content that would make you act? Because at this point I’m believing that even if we report something, you might think “it’s not a big deal”, “sorry you feel offended but they didn’t break any rules”, etc. You mention that you’ve never experienced harassment, and you haven’t seen it? How would you react to an user reporting harassment if you don’t believe it’s harassment?

I’m not trying to change your mind, but maybe give something to think about. As I said, leaving this place is not a big deal.

glasslyrata,

I haven’t reported because I don’t even know how to. Consider this my report.

But this seems like a big inconsistence. Did you even see the posts? How’s that for a case-by-case basis? What is a case bad enough? If this doesn’t do it, I don’t know what would.

It’s a shame, it was such a nice instance for science topics. But the admin makes the instance. I will move elsewhere.

glasslyrata,

You’re such an active user that at the beginning I thought it was your instance, and your presence here makes this place very active and interesting. I agree it’d be quite easy to associate you with mander as one and the same.

glasslyrata,

Yes, that sounds really demoralizing. :( I don’t know how you did it.

glasslyrata,

First I got a wall but Firefox reading mode got me through.

How Can You Avoid Getting Bit?

In order to avoid tick bites, wear long clothing, stuff your pant legs into your socks and consider treating your clothes with permethrin insecticide to avoid unwanted passengers. Environmental Protection Agency–registered tick repellents, especially those containing DEET, are also effective at keeping the parasites and other bugs away. Avoid obvious tick habitats such as shady brush, even if it’s in your own yard. When you return home, throw your clothes in the dryer and do a thorough check for ticks on your body. Ticks love nooks and crannies, so pay extra attention to damp spots such as your armpits or the backs of your knees. Also check your dogs because dog ticks can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which can also infect humans.

Even with these preventive measures, if you see a tick lodged on you, skip the matches or nail polish and resist the urge to pick it off with your fingers—you’ll only leave the tick’s mouth lodged into the skin. Instead use tweezers and pluck at the site of the bite as close to the skin as possible. If you’re planning to go camping in areas with known high tick counts, carry fine-tip tweezers—they could save your life. The CDC advises to consult your health care provider after noticing a tick bite if you start to experience flulike symptoms such as headache, chills or fever. It’s always best to catch tick-borne illnesses early.

If you’re not in the Americas, the Rocky Mointain Fever won’t be relevant. But for example, in Europe, Tick Borne Encefalitis (TBE) is a big problem. Information on this and even other countries:

www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/tick-borne-diseases

glasslyrata,

Tunic is also on my wishlist. Crossing fingers!

glasslyrata,

I enjoy writing by hand, but I do look forward to a good e-ink device (Products like the remarkable have a subscription model and it’s closed hardware and software, which is a big negative to me). Waiting to see how projects like PineNote evolve.

For now I just write on which ever notebook is closest to me. The act of writing is more important than actually storing information somewhere outside of my head.

glasslyrata,

A roundabout in my home city was turned into an elevated 4-way intersection. It wasn’t an improvement. When I visualize the city I always see the roundabout. It was there all my life.

glasslyrata,

This is just a teaser and I’m looking forward to the finished images.

However it always amazes me how disappointingly non-detailed pictures of planets can be even on the most powerful telescopes. Because they’re that far away! It takes something like Cassini going all the way there to give us a better look.

That said, the most powerful view of Saturn for me was the one I saw with my own eyes through a local telescope. It was just a little blurry thing but just actually seeing it there with the ring shape with my own eyes was indescribable.

glasslyrata,

The intro for the first season of See www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d8wnhPPsAc

For some reason they changed it for season 2 and then kept the new one for season 3. The new one is a lot more commercial and completely unremarkable.

glasslyrata,

As soon as I read this, the song started playing automatically in my head. Along with most of the visual sequences, and Richard Dean Anderson’s smile.

glasslyrata,

Agreed, I’m neither a man nor an incel but I’m diagnosed autism and ADHD and even with diagnoses and a lot of help on paper this is extremely frustrating. Too many therapies that are based on neurotypicals and we’re only beginning to scratch the surface of why they don’t work. Too many of us end up feeling deeply misunderstood and hopeless. I have to constantly keep up with autism research only to be able to speak my mind and avoid losing more years to failed attempts. I’m lucky about the people that surround me to have stopped me from increased resentment and many types of maladaptive coping mechanisms.

The instance I’m on is for science! mander.xyz

Edit: I take back my recommendation. Mander.xyz refuses to defederate with the most toxic of communities so far. And it’s leaning heavily into the “free-speech” way and being open to Meta. Example: mander.xyz/post/927735

I’m moving elsewhere.

glasslyrata,

I wonder how this works in places like my family home in Colombia. There’s municipal gas distribution for gas stoves. An electric stove for the majority of the population involves a prohibitive cost, both initially when buying the stove and ongoing, due to electricity costing much more than gas.

On the other hand, houses over there tend to be open to the air, where vents are not even needed because there’s very little separation between the air inside and outside.

And I wonder if the stove gas used varies a lot between places and how that might affect the presence of benzene.

Single Monitor for Work Focus (imgur.com)

I've been employed in the same company for the past 16 years as a systems analyst. Over the past 10 years or so I've always had 2-3 monitors (4 - 5 at times when I got real ambitious). Recently, I downgraded to a single 32" 1440p monitor and it feels as if I'm able to focus more intently on what I'm working on....

glasslyrata,

Not for me, I am “out of sight - out of mind” and on a regular day I need several tools (for example code editor, several terminal sessions and at least a browser session). When I’ve tried one screen, I can space out for a long time because I have to keep reminding myself to bring one of those tools to the foreground when I need them. I need to see all the relevant things in front of me.

I don’t really use any social or leisure sites on my work set up; I use a separate computer for that, which makes it easier to do one thing at the time. At most I have some music in the background.

glasslyrata,

I take meds and I will never fold. Best I can do is actually doing the laundry.

glasslyrata,

Things I learned from this:

  • Measuring a river is nowhere as trivial as I had assumed it would be.
  • Some people have surprisingly strong feelings about which river is longest.

That was a ride, thanks for sharing :D

A human experiment in nerve division (academic.oup.com)

From the history of pretty crazy self experimentation in medicine, a doctor has a cutaneous branch of his own radial nerve surgically cut. He then meticulously documents the progress of nerve regrowth, initial total numbness followed by neuropathic pain, and a partial return of sensation over time

glasslyrata,

This is already pretty wild, before I even got to this part:

By way of control, the authors turn to the work of Professor von Frey and Dr Rivers studies the characteristics of sensation on Dr Head's glans penis.

glasslyrata,

I am continuously surprised that some people sleep under a single blanket. This is not a custom where I'm from. I wouldn't be able to relax!

glasslyrata,

Exactly! What if I’m removing the ones that would otherwise have the best chances‽
