any recommendations out there for good and/ or interesting readings on utopia?

hugo,
@hugo@assemblag.es avatar

as practice, ideal, concept, trope, genre, historical reality, I'm not fussy. anything goes.

feel free to boost. if I get some results I'll compile the readings and share.

met up the other day with someone I hadn't seen for a couple of years, since before I wiped the last of my corporate socials and left to wander the Earth for a year.

hugo,
@hugo@assemblag.es avatar

she seemed happy and productive. it was nice to know absolutely nothing of her life, to ask questions and find out what she had been up to, to express genuine surprise, to learn about her stories and successes for the first time face to face.

it's been a few years now and I don't think about facebook much—but every so often, still, I'm reminded what a blessed relief it is not to be there: not to have the feed, not to be constantly and passively privy to the intimate detail of people's lives.

hugo,

@eco_amandine

I got used to those. what made me sit down and cut facebook completely out of my life, finally, was realizing that I was starting to dislike people that I actually liked in real life, based on what they were posting.

@seachanger @eco_amandine

quite. mystery is antithetical to the corporate yearning for perfect knowledge of you as a consumer.

I suppose in a sense making myself ignorant of what goes on in the lives of friends and colleagues, because I'm not on facebook, has been a way of reclaiming my relations to them. out of the shine and glare, the false transparency of corporate spaces.

well what do you know. enforced masking on long-haul flights stops SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

so by default, anything you do that appears on the screen of a windows user (chat or messages, say, or video calls) will now be recorded, machine transcribed or summarized, and available to anyone who gains access to the folder on that users computer where windows stores these recordings.

wonder sometimes what science would look like if we just... dropped peer-reviewed publications as a metric of achievement. came up with better ways of evaluating merit, more humane ways for choosing who to hire or how to award grants.

hugo,
@hugo@assemblag.es avatar

maybe the peer review system as it exists could actually be redeemed, if the raging torrent of articles slowed to a trickle because peer-reviewed publication wasn't a matter of life or death for everyone anymore.

hugo,

@seanbala

yeah, the UK is particularly abysmal on this. a sort of neoliberal laboratory for dehumanizing academics.

very logic. so answer. much helpful. so glad my university encourages everyone to use ChatGPT (ChatGPT-4 in this case) as a research tool.

@paezha by all means, no worries!

the current US president really going all in on supporting the extermination in gaza during an election year really seems mystifying to me. as if deliberately trying to alienate his progressive base.

hugo,
@hugo@assemblag.es avatar

is it some sort of loyalty test? pushing democrat voters to support war crimes because "the other guy is worse"? do the democrat establishment think they are invincible? are they high on their own kool-aid? I don't get it. every day trump looks more likely.

hugo,
@hugo@assemblag.es avatar

@kissane nice! thank you. that seems eminently plausible too. I guess I was interpreting it as a deliberate, agentive or strategic stance, whereas maybe it just boils down to inertia, denial, coagulated worldviews.

I sometimes think about these norwegian meteorologists in 2018, registering the first ever tropical night in tromsø—well past the arctic circle—and celebrating the event with buns and currant juice, posing for a photo in the national news. like complete fucking morons.
