Dad. Husband. Member of the .NET Libraries team at Microsoft. He/Him/His. Opinions mine.

The best systems I've worked on in my career, the ones with the fewest bugs, the best maintainability, and the best user experience, all share one trait.

Enforcing data quality was the topmost architectural tenet. They do not allow corrupt data to enter the system.

If corrupt data sneaks by, the data layer sequesters it and prevents it from leaking back out in corrupt formats.

I'm currently setting up a free, managed certificate for one of my websites.

I remember when I owned a web development company, a lot of the small businesses we worked with had a hard time affording Verisign SSL certificates. It took us far too long as an industry to reach the point of secure sites everywhere.

The day has finally arrived.

I need to buy a USB wall adapter, because I got rid of all of my surplus adapters and now a new device needs one and didn't come with one.

@jeffhandley@hachyderm.io avatar

@Nick_Craver @bradwilson @GrabYourPitchforks I’ve installed several USB-A/USB-C combo outlets in the right places at home. I do love ‘em.

The adapter I needed today is for the 10-port RGB SCART switch I’ve been sitting on. I’m finally getting all my game consoles hooked back up after moving 2 years ago, and I’m connecting them all differently than before. So for this application, I needed an old fashioned adapter to go into the surge protector.

This is one of my better saves in . It's an unusual one too. This was at the beginning of overtime, and we went on to win.

Now that’s unusual! My last 2 fill-ups for my car were exactly 13.484 gallons. Both times, I simply filled it up.

Back in March, I submitted a "bug" to Graphic Packaging, the makers of the "ecotainer" coffee cup lids. I reported that the vent hole was too small and this led to the lids not having sufficient air flow, causing the lid to "pop" when sipping a drink from them.

I just made a coffee at work and the lids now have a larger vent hole. They apparently fixed the "bug"! 🎉

@bradwilson FWIW no one’s making us come in or even suggesting it. We’ve fully embraced hybrid and the vast majority of folks have kept working from home full time. I’m choosing to come in the office regularly because I was ready for a change of scenery. Bonus: there’s free coffee!

The R that fell off from “Remodeling” is one thing, but running out of room for the N at the end of “Construction” had me laughing out loud.

What’s your best joke about this?

@tylermumford Oh, I like that!

Instead of Google Ads, I should sell ad space directly on individual blog posts. It would probably net me more in the long run. It would also be less intrusive.

In 2001-02 during my consulting days, I built a web app that was running a profitable business. The customer wanted a feature he couldn’t afford, so he went bargain shopping.

The new folks didn’t know .NET, so they rewrote the whole app in Classic ASP and simplified the layering. They eliminated the Business Logic Layer, except that logic just went poof instead of moving into the UI or Data Access layers.

The company was out of business a month after that deployment.

This is a subtweet.

I made a boo-boo with my contacts. Turns out I'd had my phone syncing contacts to a defunct google account as the default. I removed that account from my phone, and poof, gone and nowhere to be recovered from.

jeffhandley,
@jeffhandley@hachyderm.io avatar

I'm piecing a lot of my contact info back together, but the real bummer is that I've lost all of the metadata about folks. Birthdays, anniversaries, parents' and siblings' and (grand)kids' names, etc.

@tseitr For today at least, when I finished my rebuild, I saved the vCard to OneDrive, date-stamped. Then after I did a prune, I saved that copy too.
