He/him dad of three young kiddos, husband, programmer. I’m on Mastodon to feel connected with devs and dev-adjacent people, to learn new things, and to have interesting conversations. 💚

I live in #Utah and love it (the place, not the political), and I have small collections of #PocketKnives, #MultiTools, and #FountainPens. 🙂

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Me, too. So many good science (and engineering) channels. 🙂

If you had the time to go back to school to study any field at no cost, what would you choose?

tylermumford,

@Sheril Over the years, I’ve thought about studying psychology many times.

Informal poll & thought experiment:

I think it's reasonable to pay (price range) for (object) and then I shouldn't have to buy another one for (number) years.

Objects:

  1. new smart phone made by a major manufacturer
  2. new high-end personal computer for gaming or media/editing
  3. new personal/family vehicle that has some comfort options but isn't top of the line or a sports car
tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@sapphire Very interesting. There are a few ways to answer this, but I’m going with what I might be comfortable spending and purchasing.

  1. $800 phone should last 4 years
  2. $2000 computer should last 8 years
  3. $25,000 car should last 15+ years

Well, I've dived into a new hobby again. !

I got myself a Bambu Lab A1 mini, and I am having so much freaking fun.

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@joncruz Thanks! I've done a few small ones -- little washers/spacers for one of my multitools. I'm starting to design some 3D-printable tools for it, too. (the GOAT Tools multitool)

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@joncruz I'm currently learning both Onshape and TinkerCAD. I designed the washers in TinkerCAD, and it was pretty easy.

The tools are a bit more "precise" or "specified," at least in my head, so I find Onshape to be a good way to model them.

I haven't yet tried any of the programs you mentioned. Are they worth a look?

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@joncruz Thank you for the recommendations and links! I'll check them out eventually. 🙂

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@leroy Thanks! What material are you using for the plant pot?

Yes, that's exactly my experience, too. I'm having fun pushing the detail as far as I can with a smaller 0.2mm nozzle.

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@leroy Wow, very nice work!

What program does everyone use to create models for #3Dprinting ?

I've used Fusion360 before, but the current free '10 model' limit is just weird to me and I prefer to save my files locally by default.

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@thomastospace I'm really new to this, but I'm using both Onshape and TinkerCAD. Onshape is nice for precision and how my brain thinks by default. TinkerCAD is fun for experimentation and playing. Some serious design, too.

Tonight once the sun goes down, I'm gonna try to remember to go out and count how many stars are visible. Because yes, there is so much light pollution here that even if it's a clear night, the stars will be very countable.

My estimate is six. I'll update yall later! And I'd love to hear from you, are the stars in your sky countable?

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@sapphire Ooh, interesting question. I live in the Salt Lake Valley, and there’s a lot of light pollution. I didn’t get a count last night, but I can describe what I typically see.

Most nights, the stars are pretty easily countable. It’s just the Big Dipper and a few others. But on very clear nights, I’d say the stars are just barely too numerous to count, practically speaking.

New discovery I enjoy: focusing on work while listening to pop music with the vocals turned off. (Apple Music karaoke feature.)

Occupies my brain, nice energy, not distracting. Currently listening to Maisie Peters.

I have an Apple Watch Series 5 running watchOS 10 point whatever-the-latest-release-is. Every now and then, I see the red dot denoting new notifications at the top of the screen, but can’t pull down to see them. The only way to fix this is to reboot the watch.

Anyone else experiencing the same issue? Or is my watch just too fucking old?

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@digichelle I have a series 5 with similar issues. Going unresponsive, not turning on the screen. I’m blaming it on age, yeah. At least the reboots are quick enough for me.

For the today, I was lucky, prepared, and (I feel) blessed enough to see four minutes of totality.

I was excited for this, but I was still blown away by the feeling and the experience. My body felt like it was experiencing twilight, then night, and then morning. In just those four minutes, in the middle of the day.

Thank you, for letting me visit. This was truly a highlight of my life.

I witnessed a solar eclipse in 1999 on Cornwall, UK, from under a completely overcast sky.

It was disappointing. While I'm mostly over it, I still envy anyone getting to see totality today. Enjoy!

tylermumford,
@tylermumford@mas.to avatar

@sarajw We traveled 2 days to see totality today, and we'll be traveling 2 days to get home. We got lucky (and planned well) and experienced a cloudless sky and no traffic jams.

So worth it. So mind-blowingly worth it. I say seriously consider going to Spain.
