Mastodon friends… important poll (please boost for reach!)

The tables in our nearby deli have literal dried beans as decoration (see first reply to this thread for pics)

So…. beans? 🤔

johnmu,

@mariyadelano These are cool.

Had to document this - new story - John Mueller's web site not showing up in Google's index - here is what @johnmu said about it so far https://www.seroundtable.com/john-muellers-deindexed-google-37056.html

johnmu,

@simoncox @rustybrick Is this bad?

Will AI replace designers? I don't know, but the level of soup generated to justify random colors that don't really work together is high.
What we really need? A tool to input colors the designer chose because they are nice, and for it to generate the soup.
I'm sure it exists.

johnmu,

@stephaniewalter At least you don't feel bad about asking "can you make it more pop?" :-)

Well, I tried to befriend an AI recruiting chatbot by pretending I'm a cat. Because, why not?
Yesterday, I was contacted by a strange account, who would not take "no" for an answer, and would answer as if they didn't read my previous message. Suspicious. So, I bluntly asked it if it was an AI chatbot. "Me is people" they replied. So, well, me is cat, then.

johnmu,

@stephaniewalter Oh my, this is hilarious. I have the feeling one day I'll assume something is a chatbot and do something obnoxious, only to realize that it's a human after all. That said, perhaps being seen as a chat-bot could make life easier :-)

HELP I TAGGED SOMEONE IN AN INSTAGRAM POST AND MY MOTHER IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED THEM

I AM MORTIFIED HOLY CRAP

johnmu,

@mariyadelano it's awesome that your mom follows along with what you do for, probably, work. I can't imagine anyone else noticing, and if they do, they probably find it cute & cool. Embrace it.

I sure wish Tom Lehrer were still active, 'cause we need an AI Industry song from him more than ever now.

johnmu,

@lauren OK Bard, write me ...

johnmu,

@lauren @BradRubenstein I think this is getting closer. But at some point, you're basically writing it yourself.

johnmu,

@lauren @BradRubenstein I have a lot of thoughts about this, but folks love to attribute my ramblings to "Google said", so I'll keep them to myself. I do like some aspects of it.

Tonight on my usual Monday evening national network radio tech segment, I'll be discussing the meltdown at OpenAI. I'm assuming by this evening there still will be an OpenAI. Hmm.

johnmu,

@lauren It seems like a perfect opportunity to be CEO for a day, Lauren.

Welp, I now have two broken watch movements :(

Broke the Unitas movement on literally the last step of reassembly: lubricating the balance pivots, I somehow managed to snap one of the incabloc springs clean in half.

So, uuuh, now I get to figure out if that's a sanely replaceable part, or if I'm getting an entire balance complete...

johnmu,

@danderson @zblesk Happy to forward small stuff from Switzerland, if that helps (though minimal order amounts might keep it expensive). Cousins in the UK also has sets of shock / incabloc springs, that might work. US-sites probably have something similar.

In the meantime, I noticed that people sell their used watches for cheap, and watchmakers sell their used (and/or broken) movements expensively.

@searchliaison @johnmu Gentlemen, this appears to be an unintended consequence of removing crowd sourcing from Google SERPs. It's a desktop search result.

johnmu,

@michael_martinez @searchliaison I didn't realize there could be dinosaur news. Fascinating. It looks like one is singular, the other plural, so not quite the same page. But pretty close URLs. They have very different content though (a weird decision by the site, hah).

Information architecture challenge: where do you put the Maizena (corn stach)?
I looked in the pastry area, next to sugar, even gluten free one, nope. Apparently, next to dehydrated mashed potatoes?!?
I guess I was expecting function (baking) and they chose content 😁

johnmu,

@stephaniewalter The whole column is crazy. Maizena belongs near the cheese, obviously.

Ran into a fascinating JS SEO quirk just now, I'm not sure where exactly it comes from:

A site is using a JS-based POST/redirect/GET bounce through a shopping cart URL. I don't recommend it, it's unnecessary complexity, but it can work for rendering.

Except if the URL in the POST request is robotted.

The mobile friendly test & Inspect URL in GSC will fail, and you'll get "indexed but robotted" errors in the indexing report.

Simple fix: unrobot. Better: Don't use P/R/G.

johnmu,

@simoncox When it's your site, it doesn't matter if it's an edge case, you just want a solution :).

I did a thing! This is a Molnija 3602 pocketwatch movement, imported and sold in Canada under the Marathon brand in the 70s and 80s. This particular watch was made some time in the 1980s.

I took it (almost) all apart, every teeny wheel and screw and spring. Next up will be to clean all the parts, reassemble it, and... hopefully, end up with a rejuvenated watch that still works.

johnmu,

@danderson you can put it back in by hand, at least that's been the case for those I tried so far. YouTube is amazing for this kind of thing. Also apparently there are some which you can 3d print.
