@ixs there were pedestrians crossing it.

@matt_jarvin @JiMakinen E looks solid to me. But I’m not an engineer.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

So that’s border 207 of although I’ve not been mapping any borders to Russia or Belarus

Narva 🇪🇪 - Ivangorod-Narvsky 🇷🇺

Narva Station is a wasteland. Nothing happening excerpt the trains to Tallinn every couple of hours

Border security infrastructure
Empty tracks

@jon@gruene.social avatar

@pony while Ülemiste is a narrow hellhole in between shopping centres. FTW!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Pepijn ha. The station hall had a few passengers!

Today’s musical interlude is Vana vaksal by Ivo Linna https://youtu.be/aLSupQmj4CU?si=ZPdlRfzmFJ4WTAnk

This is the song from the launch event earlier.

Estonian lyrics here: https://lyricstranslate.com/ko/ivo-linna-vana-vaksal-lyrics.html?amp

“That time the train left here
and he took me far away with him,
the wheels sang the same five.
The platform under my feet is overgrown with grass.”

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Island_Martha I’ve been there before 🙂 I crossed the Suwalki gap by bike. This time it’ll be a bus (because the train is too late in the day)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Island_Martha oh that’s not an unpleasant building! It has some slightly shabby charm!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@michammel the average speed is 84km/h. More or less what you’d get by car. But I think you could easily shave 20 min off.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

This Tallinn-Narva service - especially east of Rakvere - is peculiar

The Stadler DMU is fine. The track is quite smooth. No obvious temporary speed restrictions. But it potters along at 80km/h for some long-ish sections. Is there just loads of padding in the timetable?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@orangerkater yes. Although there might be examples the other way too. I’ve not systematically checked all routes!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@orangerkater (I’d never fully trust the Interrail app anywhere for this reason)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jarjan @orangerkater no. I’m cycling via Ainazi

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Warning for Interrailers: timetables for trains in Estonia are in the Interrail app, but they’re a good bit wrong for some trains.

The train departed 1930 as Elron site said, not 1914 as Interrail said.

Train 23 Narva - Tallinn, Elron Site shows departing 1930.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Also @orangerkater said “ok, the correct time is later”

For Narva it is

For Tartu it’s not. The trains leave EARLIER than Interrail shows, so if you trusted the Interrail app you’d miss your train

I don’t know how this happened but it’s a real mess!

Elron times Tartu.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@ehrba @g @orangerkater Guys: how about rather than going “there’s an error”, dig out the right answer?

Here’s today’s summary video

https://peertube.netzbegruenung.de/w/x77ajuZ7XS4tWJJJ8Q3SFa

No complete thread tomorrow as I’m not going anywhere - I’m just in Tallinn at an event about Rail Baltica

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@orangerkater oh I totally got the point. And it was a fair one! But the later example showed it can come out the other way too

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jarjan @tops Valga timetable mess is getting a mention in my speech tomorrow :-) It’s a nice little place but I’m glad I’m going another route on Friday.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@tops well that’s the headache for @seatsixtyone - he has to do all that by hand. That’s why we need decent digital search tools!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@tops @jarjan oh where I was there there were a good dozen passengers doing precisely what I did. But there’s no demand for a solution Elron says.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jarjan @tops it’s one of my top 20 to fix. And it’s an easy one. Let’s see what happens in December if electric trains run to Tartu, meaning a Tartu-Riga could run, avoiding the change in Valga.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@jarjan @tops also we’re Valga fixed, you could get to Riga in time for the Riga-Vilnius service. And Tallinn-Riga in c. 9 hours would be progress!
