    TBH go fedi, but both sides in the Reddit drama are predators, with users sitting in the middle.

    > small scale, private initiatives

    vom.

    App devs are not upset they can't serve their users. This is about capitalists vs capitalists; large scale vs small scale doesn't matter so much.

    @LinuxClaude @sjosjo
    The specific quote I included; implied the app dev, as a capitalist, made a bad bet on the cost to revenue. This is not a user, or my concern.

    Their business can change or die like any other, unable to reconcile costs with revenue.

    It's simply nobody problem but their own; and stems from a collection of interacting poor choices.

    They as a person / people, can work on other things!

    So meta is creating a Mastodon/Twitter competitor. Sigh. I just can’t be assed with any of it anymore. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-65855603

    @boagworld Hate to say it, but I really liked Zuckerberg take on the apple headset

    Apple is $3500
    Meta is $500

    Apple, video of people sitting in chairs, in business meetings.

    Meta, folks doing active things, hanging with friends.

    This isn't support of Apple or Meta really; just that their view seems fairly palatable.

    Not sure after working at startups for 5 years if CA scandal was even their fault, or not entirely representative of most industry any more.

    Had to explain Jupyter notebook format to a friend today. They are a PHP Developer. I said this.

    So remember in the 90's you could write PHP, and then run it. They were like, sure.

    So JS and Python folks have now cottoned on to the fact that is a benefit.

    I think my friend liked that explanation 😂

    lewiscowles1986,
    @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social avatar

    @bobmagicii well I wouldn't be too smug. Compared to the late 90's, lots of things seem a lot more trash.

    There is some forward thinking of course; but as you point out, lots of people tie themselves to the totem of a framework very quickly. Usually the more heavy and poorly opinionated, the more popular and alluring.

    Many people won't question anything. Is Laravel using S3 in the way AWS laid out in whitepaper? No, they must know better... No critical thinking at all. Same for Rails, Django.

    lewiscowles1986,
    @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social avatar

    @bobmagicii

    const print = console.log;
    fetch('index.py').then(response => response.text().then(script => eval(script)));

    right 😉

    lewiscowles1986,
    @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social avatar

    @bobmagicii technically a lightweight sandbox would only be a simple dmz in a dmz, and bind away.

    Not that i'd advise that approach; I'm happy enough with JS on my frontend; or straight rendering from a backend like the good old days.

    @ramsey have you had any issues on Discord?

    Every time I join, my friends say it's noisy via M1's.

    I've tried M1 Pro, M1 regular and M1 Ultra. Really not sure what is up as it's a wired connection.

    @brammm @ramsey I turned it off in-case that was the cause (so it was on when it started). No effect

    Krisp is kinda... spotty at times. Definitely not something to setup (standalone) while on a call (can result in no sound).

    I Wouldn't mind, I keep the mac fairly vanilla, preferring to run most dev crap in containers.

    Is my audio that bad on other calls, and nobody is telling me? IDK

    I'm so excited to share that my book, HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS: INSIDE THE SYSTEMS THAT SHAPE THE WORLD, will be out on October 17th of this year, on Riverhead Books. It's about the globe-spanning systems we've built to meet our needs: what systems like electricity, water, transportations and telecommunications have in common, how they work, and what needs to change to make them resilient, functional and equitable.

    You can preorder it now at:

    I Saw a post about people trying to rewrite Terraform on bird-site. It might be a joke I took literally, but if you try to rewrite terraform, over minor differences. You might want to know that you can likely just fork the provider, run a go build, and move the binary to a magic location, described in https://developer.hashicorp.com/terraform/cli/config/config-file#implied-local-mirror-directories or https://developer.hashicorp.com/terraform/language/providers/requirements and only need to own your changes.

    It's a much smarter, better way for most folks.

    Did just send out a picture of a bunch of folks doing the white power hand sign?

    lewiscowles1986,
    @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social avatar

    @ramsey if they are upset at the OK hand sign, then they are hysterical nit-wits at the least!

    Nobody was chucking two hands in that photo. Nobody was making a W deliberately.

    And if they did and I recognised it as WP, I would probably think WordPress before the other thing. It's a choice to be offended in many cases. If a criminal chucks this sign; that is not their crime.

    This smacks of this Snopes article https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/stephen-miller-white-power-hand-sign/

    @ramsey From the page you linked

    > The overwhelming usage of the “okay” hand gesture today is still its traditional purpose as a gesture signifying assent or approval. As a result, someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention. Since 2017, many people have been falsely accused of being racist or white supremacist for using the “okay” gesture...

    lewiscowles1986,
    @lewiscowles1986@phpc.social avatar

    @ramsey is this the world we want to live in? Honestly?

    This bit, same page was what I thought was happening as they are all smiling and one moron:

    the one with flat outstretched hand, who I thought you was saying was flipping a holy sieg

    > One of these is the so-called “Circle Game,” in which people attempt to trick each other into looking at an okay-like hand gesture made somewhere below the waist.

    I thought it was the circle game, but OK is also OK.

    lewiscowles1986,

    @ramsey Moreover. If someone is such an absolute coward that they cannot bring themselves to explicitly, or through their actions, be repping lack of pigmentation power. How pathetic of them. What an absolute monument to the wrongness of the idea of any so-called "race" being "the best", or "the most powerful" in any meaningful sense.
