I think you’ve got principles and policies mixed up. What you’ve described is a policy.

A principle for a party of workers might be: To champion workers rights for the betterment of society.

A policy for that principle could be: to not accept right wing nutters into your party because they are inherently anti worker.

But equally another policy could be: publicly humilate incumbent anti worker government in an election cycle by accepting a defector from their party knowing full well it will be temporary because they’re standing down in the next election.

In a crucial election year one policy is infinitely better than the other.

That’s not how the news cycle sees it. If we are to believe the left wing rhetoric that the entire media is against Labour always and forever then the media proclaiming a win for Starmer and a humiliation for Sunak speaks volumes. And that’s what most of the electorate will see as well.

We don’t have a good track record of creating the conditions needed for companies to be that massive. ARM probably had no choice but to leave.

Come to think of it I don’t think we even have an industrial strategy. Something to look out for in the election manifestos.

Varoufakis likes to position himsetas a sage. Someone that “saw it coming and warned everyone but nobody listened”. He likes to pop back and pretend he had solutions or influence but the world just conspired against him.

I don’t know if he’s wrong on this one. I do know he often sprays a bunch of doomsayer predictions and only reviews the ones he was vaguely in the same ballpark for. He’s the classic embodiment of the Texas Sharpshooter fallacy and, naturally, a lot of people want to believe what he’s pedaling. If he sells a few books or gets paid to give speeches here and there then so be it. After all… he did warn us.

Yeah fair enough. I should say I haven’t read his latest. He’s been almost constantly on the European media circuit with hot takes on anything and everything from economics to science to politics to culture since the Greek economic crisis with the EU.

I used to like him in the beginning but after a while I got the impression he was the guy at the bar with a whisky and cigar in his hand telling the same story to patrons. But, my god, what a story it was!

Yeah I do think he’s got an eye on that 2016 Labour Brexit vote. I also think that while the situation has changed with respect to Brexit, it clearly hasn’t changed enough in the vote Labour camp to make the Labour leader change his position for this election. He’s not stupid and would have done some serious polling and canvassing in the the Brexit Labour heartlands. Probably also wants to mop up some Tory votes as well.

Starmer needs to court the Brexit vote to get into power. Right now he’s happy to do that of that means a win in the election. Wed Love him to be idealistic and say: enough with this nonsense let’s rejoin. But he’s being realistic. It needs a change in the Tory Brexit voting minds… but first it needs a change in the Labour Brexit minds.
