Another lovely May evening ride, albeit with a brisk northerly wind 💨

Inland to Vogelenzang, including part of the Leidsevaart with its daisies, then back along the coast & past the beaches, then to Noordwijk & its new Ferris wheel, before the riding home through dunes to Wassenaar in the dusk 🎡

70km tonight, 200km for the week 👍

The Sun very close to the horizon surrounded by an orange glow. The North Sea is seen below it, with a beach and some people in the foreground.

Another “victim” of my sorting & clearing ahead of our move: five copies of my 1988 University of Edinburgh PhD thesis headed for recycling 😬✌️

But don’t panic: these are all water-damaged & I still have eight clean copies of the one hundred originally printed for me during my first postdoc at NASA Goddard 🚀🛰️

The rest were circulated to colleagues back in the early days of infrared arrays in astronomy 🔭

How far we’ve come 🙂👍

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

p.s. Let me know if you have a copy: I suspect that at least few people here on Mastodon do.

I’d offer to share the rest, but I think it’s fair to say that the work on infrared array detector characterisation, data simulation, & early near-IR imaging of the Orion Nebula have been rather, err, surpassed 🙀

When you realise you are just a brain in a vat 😬

Was busy yesterday & kept wondering whether I’d remembered to do the daily Wordle over breakfast as usual 🧐

Sort of assumed I did, because I always do, but forgot to check before going to bed 🤷‍♂️

Woke up this morning & realised I hadn’t 🙀

25 day streak lost 😭

Decided I should get back to it immediately 😤

Then this happened 😬✌️

Must be because it’s Jürgen Klopp’s last Liverpool game today 🙃

@AkaSci Exactly. Lots of people will be failing today – it’s one of those classic Wordle tank traps 🫠

Well, that was quite lovely 🙂

A sunset ride out along the Lisserdijk & Hillegommerdijk on the west side of the Haarlemmermeer polder, & back via Bennebroek & the Leidsevaart.

61km in total & beautifully cool by the time I got home in the dark 🙇‍♂️

I’m going to miss this 😬

You are with friends in a forest at night. It is winter & snow covers the ground.

Wolves growl just beyond the faint light of your candles.

You are cold, hungry, & afraid.

You discover a wooden summer house in a glade. It is open & well-stocked.

Safety.

Then one of your friends runs inside, locks the door, & eats all the food.

Another sets fire to the house & dances joyfully in the warmth.

Sparks fly & ignite the trees.

You are hot, hungry, & afraid.

@AlexanderKingsbury You’re completely missing the point about the brief moment of light & warmth from the burning house.

Of course these things are possible & have happened under capitalism.

But at what cost to a universally uplifted humankind & the future?

Try reading this & tell me that neoliberal capitalism, where the rich become immensely richer by exploiting their “care” of the vulnerable is morally acceptable.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@AlexanderKingsbury You can have both. That’s where your lack of imagination betrays you. You actually believe that the current form of rampant neoliberal capitalism is actually the very best system possible.

But you’re right. I don’t have to listen to apologists for billionaires.

I’ve lived the last fifteen years in The Netherlands & although I doubtless have a limited & biased view, I’ve been happy with what has seemed broadly to be a progressive, tolerant, & environmentally-conscious society.

I guess this new centre- & far-right government coalition is about to trash all of that with its reactionary populist bullshit 🤮

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/16/new-dutch-coalition-aims-to-reintroduce-80mph-limit-in-cull-of-climate-goals

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@JonnyT I have to admit that I typed just “far-right” initially, so I agree with you. I get that Wilders won a substantial piece of the popular vote, but the VVD are shameless in accommodating his noxious views. Europe is heading towards another disastrous episode of populism, as if we didn’t learn a bloody thing eighty years ago.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@bartvdpoel I hope you’re correct (I almost typed right), but it’s absolutely clear that the Overton window is shifting rightwards all over Europe again.

The initially empty promises of populists have a habit of becoming reality more quickly than you’d expect. Look across the continent & tell me it’s not happening already in places like Hungary, Italy, the UK, Slovakia, etc.

And if the US falls for it again this year, things will spiral ever more rapidly.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@saarmuller Indeed, just what we’re doing in ten days time, if not for this reason as such. Problem is, I don’t believe that anywhere in Europe is free of this scourge – it’s just a matter of how far along each country is so far.

And indeed, it’s a global problem, as nationalists & populists weaponise the growing fears & discontents of their citizens. Rather than coming together to face the huge challenges, it looks more like we’re going to go down in flames lit by people denying them.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@bartvdpoel Societies change & progressive, sensible business as usual can be swept away. Wilders in govt now is direct proof of that.

Right-wing politicians are then shameless about inserting their people into nominally non-political positions, slowly turning the screw & pushing news, debate, rhetoric ever rightward to “patriotism”.

Look at the BBC leadership in the UK, the Supreme Court in the US, almost everything in Poland & Hungary. No country & no constitution is immune.

@doddington Excellent 👍 Interestingly, I couldn’t fuse it at all to begin with on my phone. I had to pinch zoom in to the centre, then I could fuse the planes & was able to hold them in focus when I zoomed back out 🤷‍♂️

Hoping to see a few more in the garden here before we leave in ten days time – I have no idea if there will be any at the house we’re renting in Germany. Lots of trees nearby, but 100m elevation above the river 😬

I’ve been told someone on “the other place” wants to use my 2018 emoji synopsis of one of the all-time great films to promote a showing in Montreal.

I don’t post there anymore, but the answer is “sure, with credit, & please use the latest version”👇

Name the film 🙂

Ouch 😬

Fingers crossed for my friends in the ESA mission operations team & colleagues from industry as they work to restore the solar electric propulsion system to full power 🤞

The SEP system is critical to adjust Bepi’s trajectory between the various Mercury flybys, slowing the spacecraft down ahead of entry into orbit around this enigmatic innermost planet in December 2025.

https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Operations/Glitch_on_BepiColombo_work_ongoing_to_restore_spacecraft_to_full_thrust

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@AlexSanterne The SEP system has been glitchy for a while, AFAIK, but there is redundancy & I'm hopeful that they will be able to recover full operational capability and/or work on new options for getting into Mercury orbit.

But this is speculation on my part now, as I'm no longer in the loop.

starstryder, to random
@starstryder@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean I'm looking at a Nature paper that builds on the papers you did with Pearson. Are your papers still in peer-review purgatory? (Or is my google foo failing me?)

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@starstryder Thanks, Pamela.

Yes, they're both in peer review still, albeit the "fault" lies on our side. We've been working on revising them for many months, particularly with an extensive reanalysis of the JuMBOs after (helpful) comments from the referees.

The good news is that we're just about to resubmit that paper, probably tomorrow, & the other will follow rapidly after.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@starstryder Definitely.

I think the Sagan aphorism "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" applies here & although it has meant a lot of time & effort, I think the referees were right to demand a much more robust analysis given how bonkers the objects seem to be.

Hopefully the revised paper will convince them that it should be published.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@starstryder We also need spectroscopy to confirm them though & while we have some with JWST now, the main observation failed thanks to guide star acquisition problems.

We're hopeful we've solved that & can get a second go later this year when Orion is available again.

(There are also things to be said about proprietary periods & the intense pressure to publish data from new telescopes, but that's for another time, perhaps.)
