I do kind of agree that MMOs were carved up into different genres but I want someone to try to replicate SWG. Maybe dune awakening will be it

The Daily Grind: Is gliding a good compromise to flying in MMOs?

@massivelyop

It is fine. It also challenges players to be creative and patient in solving the obstacles to reach places.

It is why, many of us core #GuildWars2 players often recommends for new players to play the core game without gliding and any mounts even if they can unlock it already. This teaches the players how #GW2 works, especially when it comes to jumping puzzles and hard to reach places.

Oftentimes, in Guild Wars 2 at least, maps and puzzles made with flying in mind, were made similarly the way the early maps (without mounts) were made: make it very challenging that will require the player to be creative and fire up all those neurons in their brains.

And gliding is a perfect halfway through full-blown flying (as #WorldOfWarcraft offers). You still have to be creative and use those neurons.

To sideline, GW2 doesn't exactly have a full-blown flying mount like #WoW. The next step in “flying” after gliding, is the Gryphon. It's very fast “gliding” mount. Like gliding, Gryphon mounts work best when you are up high, so you can enable its speed mode (which is technically the fastest in the game).

Then the Skyscale mount is the best flying mount in GW2, which is still not a full-blown flying mount. You can't just fly all you want, you still have to find ways to climb because the Skyscale's stamina is limited. The higher you go, the faster it is consumed, and the less the Skyscale can store.

If #Palia will introduce something similar to GW2's mounts, then gliding is a very good start to practice. Just like in GW2, gliding was the first form of flying before the Gryphon and Skyscale were introduced.

So, yes, it is good to have gliding. It is also a good sign that the devs will not introduce a full-blown flying mount the way WoW did.

Sadly this kind of resonates with my experience. It's very clear that the devs love this game, and the worldbuilding is epic. Unfortunately, there are several major issues in terms of gameplay systems that stop you in your flow.
My biggest grievance so far (apart from some unfortunate bugs) is that there is no clear indicator how hard a given foe is to fight, so you sometimes get oneshot, even on early islands.

I too have shelved the game for the time being, I'll check back later.

@massivelyop I kind of appreciate what GW2 did, where we're important, but ultimately not essential. The world would have had another person to fill that void.

But I am realizing I much prefer games where the game doesn't care about the player. Whether you live or die the world will continue, though you do have some impact on it

merc,
@merc@techhub.social avatar

@massivelyop This idea that "you are the main character" ruins immersion.

In World of Warcraft's Legion expansion, I saw people walking around with "Archdruid" titles for months. Then, I finished that quest line, and the NPCs told me that I was the one and only leader of the druids, the Archdruid, and gave me access to the title.

Shadowlands was even worse. I was the maw walker, the only mortal able to enter the maw and come back. Except it's an MMO and the maw was crowded with other players.

mrgrgr,

@massivelyop Solid take. I'd add that good DMing for D&D often means dressing up a player's misses with flavor (especially if they keep missing). Older RPGs were cool saying MISS all the time in bold letters, but I prefer a Hit (Absorbed) or Hit (Dodged) any day.

I really, really don't like this. This is such a weird take on hero classes or class skins. Why are they restricting class fantasy to 2/3 specs? Such a weird choice.

keyboardgf,

@massivelyop Given it wasn't that long ago that I bought all three games on GOG, it's a little frustrating to see them pop up on Battle.net now. Are these even the GOG updated versions? They're asking about the same price for them. Also I highly doubt that they'll make a way for us to link our GOG account (or simply put in our GOG license keys) to get the games in bnet if we already own them... Annoying given GOG was the official, legitimate way to purchase them. There's no way I'm buying another copy of these games

KevinFlynn,

@massivelyop
I'm not part of the generation that played Pokémon, and the cute graphics are mostly lost on me, and for a few other reasons this isn't really a game that seems like I'd enjoy it. Despite all that, I bought it on Friday to play a little with some friends and I did nothing but play it and eat microwave food for three days.

Very addictive and rewarding, it scratches a few of the itches: Exploration, base building, system management, tech progression, companions, cooperative play, combat. Despite the cartoony characters, the visuals are pretty nice too.

Looks like Pokémon, plays like Valheim.

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@massivelyop I hope it wasn't ai powered. I've enjoyed the gameplay a lot overall and feel like it is well designed in terms of progression, discovery and gameplay loops. It's still early on in play, but I am very curious to see if we learn anything from their development. The game has been in production for a long time so if AI was the primary source of production, you would think the dev time would have been a lot shorter.

VerseAndVermin,

@massivelyop All spite for Blizzard as side for a second, I think they failed to realize the value of the game. It's casual friendly and simple enough to be adopted to controller for consoles, with short matches on top. Most importantly, it was fun.

Kind of funny that the dimming of Blizzard's star has also devalued their heroes though.

@massivelyop Seriously excited for this. I hope they don't break Empyrion, but the sad fact is that the game is way overdue for some major rebalancing and polishing -- especially in the combat. Getting really sick of stuff like completely clearing out an area, then suddenly a mutant is behind me attacking and I'm infected with something that is 100% guaranteed to kill me before I can get it healed.

Fingers triple crossed here (double cancels, but triple just adds more.)

@massivelyop
Thanks for bringing it to my attention that I could play City of Heroes again and NCSoft endorses it. I remember the original game fondly, although back in the day I never reached level cap. In fact, I mostly just created new heroes over and over again.

I decided to give it a go this weekend and despite low expectations hoping mostly for a nostalgic buzz, I had fun. There seems to be some actual content in the game now instead of just beating up thugs in offices, and the enhancements system gives you motivation of collect and improve your abilities as you level.

Made a few heroes, had fun wearing a cape and flying around, ended up in the hospital a couple times 10/10 would play again. Excelsior!
