cannot emotionally relate to the people who get mad about paying higher tax rates than folks who make/have less than them

all that energy goes to being mad about paying a higher effective tax rate than people who make/have way way more than me

are you just unhappy because you can see working-class people and not the *illionaires who are the actual free-loaders? is this a babies-don't-have-object-permanence thing??

"McMansions are built for people who have achieved some level of affluence, but who stubbornly retain a non-elite love of ornamentation. They inspire passionate contempt in many sophisticated critics, to whom they afford a rare opportunity to flex cultural power without looking as though one is being nasty to poor people."

(you can't try to tell me mcmansions aren't ugly but this piece is really good)

is it true that we should call the web "bloated" because it has a bunch of things we don't like as well as what we do? is "bloat" applicable to what you think the web is? i might call a book that contained irrelevant and low-quality material "bloated", but i'd hesitate to describe e.g. a city that way.

maya,
@maya@occult.institute avatar

if "bloat" were only meaningful relative to an intended purpose or a recognized function... then maybe we shouldn't be quick to impose/designate either of those w/r/t something as vast as the www

maya,
@maya@occult.institute avatar

I am very very sure that the people who came up with the policy of banning saying "thank you" on stackexchange would relate to the idea of "bloat" and I am also very sure you would get a different lens from whatever couples got married after enough off-topic chatter on email listservs back in the day

linked to my unpopular recipe blog opinion... that it evinces deep self-centeredness to complain that the convenience of your drive-by usecase should be prioritized over the varied considerations that can lead the author to include a bunch of non-recipe stuff ("waaa why do i have to scroll past your life story to get the recipe i'm not paying you for"). in that case, I'm very confident I'm right, but there's some material analysis pointing as to why – I don't have that for "the web" in general

i made a tiktok account again, was using it to dream about luxury travel, and it started showing me handbags

now i am handbag-pilled in the sense that i can See them and what they are communicating when before i had only been literate at the level "ah, she is carrying a purse" (with, like, louis-vuitton-monogram-shaped exceptions)

it is fascinating how many mutually unintelligible layers of social signaling are operative in the world

Small Fedi or Big Fedi?

maya,
@maya@occult.institute avatar

@evan What you present as one side gets its opinions fleshed out in little statements, and what you present as the other side gets its opinions followed by "[People who disagree] just don't get it", more than once. Do you think that's even-handed?

maya,
@maya@occult.institute avatar

@evan This constitutes feedback, then, that what you have written is not coming off as presenting varied viewpoints in the way that those who believe in them might. That seems like a shame, because there's definitely a lot worth chewing over on these topics.

and no one could claim i'm inadequately enmeshed in its technical aspects

but it is Extremely Important to me that it gets a punny/themed name to match other systems and it is hard to pretend to be laid-back when I will absolutely die on the hill that other people have not yet acknowledged exist
