One thing I hadn’t thought of before was how much of math for kids is based on the idea of cash. Sweden is mostly a cashless society, and I’ve not carried cash for well over a decade. But trying to teach my daughter a little math and some “economics”, and it’s really hard to do without something physical to attach it to. Having her use my phone to “tap to pay” for candy last weekend, and.. it’s just too abstract how that works. Gonna get some cash for her to pay for her candy today.

@anderseknert I feel you. We started with cash when our daughter was 4 and she had to “pay us” to buy the things she was saving up for.

It worked pretty well, but yes abstract.

Now she is 6 and got her own card. We “deposit” money she gets from grandparents etc and she can see her balance. Works better now; when it’s her own account and she is a bit older.

How old is your kid?

@anderseknert yeah, I do have issues with the way things are going. I’m not to keen on my kids getting their own device any time soon.

But I think cards will be around for another 2-3 years 🧐 - both our bank and Revolut had 6 as an age limit.

And it’s really cute how she can tap her card to buy ice cream by herself now….

@anderseknert since we are both in Sweden they are the same 😄.

But really what cracked it for us was the saving money. Around 4,5 she wanted a really expensive toy (Magic Mixie) we told her she needed to save for it herself.

She started doing the “Pant” and asking for money from family instead of gifts.

She asked for help very often to count her cash. This taught her a lot.

Then I had to buy the toy with my card and the cash still sits in a drawer. For her it was seamless.
