Next level-up I wanna take skill points in “understanding a person’s speech in a noisy environment”

Is there a way to grow that skill in real life?

mkilby,
@mkilby@hachyderm.io avatar

@jessitron it’s actually a complicated scenario with many variables: indoor/outdoor? Density of people per sq ft in room (ambient) vs density of people near you (near ambient), volume and distance of speaker you are trying to focus on, and then a number of things going right in the complex machinery inside your head. I started exploring a similar question starting in 2012 with some unexpected discoveries … and still exploring

Today I got to spend over an hour talking with a client about what's "gone wrong" with software development in a way that:

  • openly eliminated blame (at least, I think so)
  • focused on optimistically improving the situation (at least, I hope so)

What happens next lies in their hands.

@gdinwiddie @jbrains I immediately had the same question as George. Makes me wonder about a few things

I normally would not post a job here on Mastodon, but I hope this helps someone in this difficult job market.

My company is looking for a Appian and must be a US citizen or green card holder. No sponsorship (sorry). highly preferred as we are a vet-owned US federal contractor. You can get details and apply at https://sprezzmc.bamboohr.com/careers/256

Sad continues it's sad death. I've been an Evernote user since the early betas - approx 100 Millon yrs ago.

Yesterday they laid off all North American + Chilean staff. The new owners Bending Spoons have also massively increased prices.

I've been migrating out of Evernote slowly for several yrs.

Lessons:

  • VC money - be careful you don't own your journey
  • Data must be portable - migrating away from Evernote is time consuming to do well.

@mlevison thank you for this: “Using Obsidian (currently) is like taking apart your car in your garage once a week.”

I couldn’t quite put my finger on why I resist using as a daily note taker, but you nailed it. As a tool geek, I always want to try a new O-plug-in or reorganize when I’m in there. It’s fun to tinker with but challenging to jump in, do an errand, and jump out.

@mlevison @thirstybear I will say is probably the best current solution for a personal wiki (if that resonates). The flat file structure gives me confidence that my knowledge organization is still there even if the app disappears one day.

Quick summary of Cognitive Load from the Learning Scientists: https://www.learningscientists.org/blog/2023/7/6

Pay attention to the "element interactivity" part of cognitive load. We're not good at keeping track of and paying attention to too many things at the same time.

This is where learning your editor's shortcut keys and practicing them until they're automatic (don't require thought) can help: you can keep your (scarce) attention on the higher-level problem/solution and not on "where is that Extract Method option?"
