@BakerRL75 Yeah, normally for me it's "if I'm on and see something" that said, usually for moderate risks or higher that seem to be panning out I'll drop other stuff and pay attention to live relays if I can
@mybarkingdogs@BakerRL75 Definitely in the "situational awareness" category here for my followers, since none of them followed me over here for severe weather/tornadoes, but mostly for wildfires (and general disaster/disaster prep).
@epiceneVivant@dibi58@mybarkingdogs I’m pretty convinced Iran is also already a nuclear power, and I think Saudi Arabia is awful close if not there already as well.
Moved from someone else's thread because it was off topic, but "what server do I join" is... a mess. Even if one comes well-recommended, it can be a bad fit for any given individual. I love where I'm at now, but it did take me a while to get here.
It's definitely a racism problem because being BIPOC (which I'm not!) makes "finding where I fit" harder, AND it's also a problem of fragmentation over centralization, and what centralization does exist being centralized around large instances.
(when I say I shouldn't have been born I'm not kidding: not only am I descended from the world's worst colonizers and live in the imperial core itself, I literally was an oops baby and barely survived infancy. So... yeah. I'm someone who shouldn't have ever existed in any good, just world and nature tried its best to restore balance, still failed because assholes live forever, and I'm too cowardly to go through with killing myself like I should :P)
Even if you were descended from Henry Kissinger himself, that wouldn't be your fault. We each do the best we can to make a better world, based on the circumstances we find ourselves in, and that's all you can do.
You're one of the gentlest and kindest people I've come across on fedi. You absolutely improve the lives of those around you. Nobody needs to "deserve" to live, but if your jerkbrain ever demands that you justify your existence, then to me you routinely justify yours many times over.
Going to post some more of my Japanese garden pics later tonight (and maybe finally get to the cherry blossoms) - was just kind of distracted today in general.
Relatedly, I think that showed me that as much as I like photography I think I do just want to invest in a phone upgrade to a good enough phone (my current is... okay but the pics obviously aren't super high res) or get a mirrorless point and shoot type camera, if I ever have the money to do either
@mybarkingdogs I pulled my hair out trying to get THE SHOT of some of my miniatures while using my DSLR until I just whipped my phone out and shot them that way. I can get the phone camera into all sorts of weird angles that I just can't do with the big lenses. and I dont have to do any corrections. I can turn the phone upside down and get a perfect up-shot of a gundam model that actually gives a great sense of scale.
But youll pry my 400mm telephoto from my cold dead hands, I love that ungainly baseball bat for long range photos, even if it does give me a crick in my neck.
@wanderinglens@mybarkingdogs I'm about to sell my DSLR for basically this reason... Every time I use it alongside my phone I typically end up using the phone pics anyway, and it's such a pain in the ass to use comparatively.

If you're in a warning don't do what I did earlier this year and go out and look at the cool storm.
At least, not until you know where you're going for shelter and have plans to get there in less than a couple minutes/are already there and just need to jump in
Get to shelter, put on your head protection and your protective footwear in case you DO get hit, you probably won't, but it's worth doing. Have your whistle/bullhorn and phone where they can be easily used even if you can't move
Odds are, it will miss you. That said, if it DOES hit your location, your odds of survival and being able to help others will be heavily increased by just those few extra steps to prepare.
I'm probably going to be doing relays for tornado warnings, but if you are in #Texas#Oklahoma#Kansas#Nebraska, or Indigenous #TribalLands in that space landlocked by the US SPECIFICALLY - have multiple ways to access weather warnings.
Make sure your phone is on, charged, and not on Do Not Disturb. Have a NOAA weather radio, ideally. Find some local media coverage if you have it.

That was pretty refreshing to begin with: full, non-weirdly cut, respectful interviews with student protestors on a local news broadcast
...then when they moved from local to national coverage of the protests they of course repeated the usual cop narratives as per local news norms and fucked it all up :(
If you want to find it it's the cbs 8 news 11:00 pm for San Diego. First/open story where the reporter is actually interviewing the UCSD students, that part is nicely done - showing everything, providing empathy, showing faces is the only problem but... for as copfriendly as lib/centrist local news is that's "wow"
then they throw to desk and immediately start the bullshit faucet about "riots and chaos," arrest numbers, etc with nowhere near that level of respect/depth the UCSD interview had
