LOL, garage sale bargain of the day. I had been thinking about finding a new Ikea desk lamp for a bedside table (very low priority), but hadn't figured anything out and Ikea is 50 miles away. Ran across someone at a garage sale and they had this Ikea lamp... which they sold to me for 25 cents. Even better than Ikea (secondhand, nearby Ikea stuff for basically nothing)!

@clive Seemed perfect for either just reading a book in bed or sitting in a chair!

LOL can't read this article from the Mercury News (paywall), but they don't need GenAI to answer that question.

"Why does I-80 always clog right before University Avenue in Berkeley on Saturday afternoons? What’s causing the nighttime crashes on I-280 from Meridian Avenue to McLaughlin Avenue in San Jose? And what’s the reason I-5 near Del Paso Road in Sacramento continually ranks as one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the state?"

Here's a hint: the answer is: TOO MANY PEOPLE DRIVING CARS

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@sysop408 Thanks! Though... all the photos show TOO MANY CARS, LOL... doesn't take generative AI to figure that one out, ha ha.

@samhainnight Oh, of course, but that results in too many cars, LOL.

Re the Adobe terms of service uproar, the company is claiming that it's all just a misunderstanding.

Anything is possible, but consider:

  1. Adobe is a longstanding abuser of the "intellectual property" system. (A former CEO once told me that if the company's software could make copyright effectively permanent, that would be fine.)

  2. Every time we hear about one of these licensing "mistakes" it's always -- always -- on the side of giving the company more control, and money.

NY Times: Personal Conflicts, Even Violence, Are Not Uncommon in Long-Term Care

Arguments, verbal abuse and aggression are not unusual in elder care settings. Better staffing and training can ease the tensions, experts say.

*** Personal opinion, from knowing too many first responders:

"Your relative laying in a pool of vomit or excrement for hours (and maybe dead) before someone calls 911 is not unusual, and staff usually won't help them.... depending on the facility"

Electronics repair of the day. Air pump/inverter/USB charger/jump box. We use it a lot. Someone suggested it get tossed. I bought a new battery and it's back in business.

ai6yr, (edited )
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

A new unit is $180 to $350 depending on who you buy it from (why the difference, I do not know). A new battery, bought locally (Batteries Plus) was pricey, at almost $70... but having been bitten by a large number of either counterfeit or fake batteries at Uncle Jeff's Online Emporium (Amazon), I have switched to local purchases until someone here can suggest a better alternative.... #batteries #electronics

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

My assumption now is any battery bought from Amazon (sometimes, even from Amazon itself) is fake... with maybe exception of "Amazon Basic" batteries. After buying and weighing AA batteries ("Energizer" "Duracell" etc.) from a number of online outlets, and comparing them to the same brands bought at Lowe's, Home Depot, or Target... all the online ones are either fake or grey market crap... (maybe I was unlucky when I did that experiment, but....)

Tonight's menu: cheap beer chicken! (With BBQ sauce). Since I don't think the slug traps are working as intended, and don't think the backyard Wood Rat should be wandeing around drunk the whole week. #BBQ #chicken

ai6yr, (edited )
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Conclusion: "ginger ale can filled with cheap beer chicken" is DELICIOUS! The beer evaporating from the can really does make the chicken moist. I don't know if adds much flavor (probably, any alcohol or soda would do). Maybe the best whole chicken I've made on the BBQ in awhile... #chicken #beer

Pretty sure the next door neighbor that hates us was having a "discussion" with one of the other neighbors about how much of a blight my almost-a-Little-Free-Library was on the neighborhood 😂

I heard... (angry words) "making random people stopping in front of our house"

Either that, or my recent posting of a bunch of items on Craigslist for free, ha ha.

DIY stucco repair - repainted around the new sliding glass door. Will see how it looks as it ages, blended this into the existing stucco in hopes it will age better. #diy #stucco

Wider view of wall showing matching colors seem to blend in well... at least today

(after figuring out it is near useless for slug trapping, and mostly just good for keeping the Wood Rat happy).

If the Microsoft Windows 11 PC (which I am forced to use for client/work) is any proof, every Microsoft AI feature added to the OS is subtracting 15-20% of the productivity from your employees. 🙄

Or, maybe it's Patch Tuesday.

@deewani LOL... the work Microsoft Windows Machine is on about its 8th update reboot... just did a bunch of reboots (on Sunday, mind you, unattended and forced itself awake). Thing is so slow. Linux FTW!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@deewani The nice thing about Linux is you can load it on any old machine you get from the last 10 years or more to try. All my machines were dragged off the curb/out of recycling piles/free and loaded with Linux, because it takes so much less overhead than Windows. There's a slight learning curve, but not like it used to be.
