After @njtierney reviewed one of my packages, and commented on DESCRIPTION white space style, I decided to revisit read.dcf and white space in my pre-commit hooks.

Which also had me reviewing @grrrck modifications to the hooks they had made in a fork to keep automatic from overriding a manual change, and updated the hooks.

Now the hooks live in an actual GH repo instead of gists, hopefully making them easier to find for others.

Hi folks!

I've run out of time this week to do public package review, but I'm keen to do this next week on the 28th, Australia time,

https://aus.social/@njtierney/112087675371133644

I'm going to review @rmflight 's

pkg - ICIKendallTau
https://github.com/MoseleyBioinformaticsLab/ICIKendallTau

Will post more details soon - let me know if anyone would like to co-host :)

I'll post a link to the livestream package review here - the review will be at 8am Hobart (Melbourne/Sydney) time - you can see your timezone here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meetingdetails.html?year=2024&month=3&day=27&hour=21&min=0&sec=0&p1=396

@rmflight

That's a wrap folks! Thanks to people who tuned in, looking forward to doing this again, I think I'll try and make it a fortnightly or even a weekly thing!

Does anyone know how I can have co-hosts while streaming? Would love to have people along for the ride via video instead of chat only.

njtierney,
@njtierney@aus.social avatar

@lwpembleton @rmflight I couldn't see it! At least on desktop, I didn't want to stream from my phone!

njtierney,
@njtierney@aus.social avatar

@lwpembleton @rmflight I'll work it out eventually! There's probably a simple solution on twitch or some such!

One could probably write a fairly popular & successful pkg that does nothing but wrap join functions and implements all the sundy bells & whistles from FRs that pop up over & over.

njtierney,
@njtierney@aus.social avatar

@joranelias What's an FR?

Just wanted to share a talk I gave remotely at the University of Auckland - something I care about a lot: Functions!

The talk was called "Practical Functions: Practically Magic", and tries to get at what I think is important about functions and how to teach them.

You can see the slides and materials here: https://github.com/njtierney/funfun

the example repository I used to demo a data analysis refactor is here: https://github.com/njtierney/ozed

Thanks very much to @milesmcbain for his helpful feedback on the talk in development, and also to the IDEM team.

Let me know if you've got any thoughts, keen to talk more about this.

@njtierney@aus.social avatar

@tslumley I swear I ran spell check! But I guess it isn't caught with _. Thanks for catching that.

And thanks for your questions and discussion today :)

Hello fine folks,

I'm going to do another public package review!

My goal with this project is that I want to showcase the process of doing package development and reviewing. If you'd like your package reviewed, I would be happy to take a look, and promise I will be kind :).

I am aiming for probably Friday 22nd March. Depending on where the package being reviewed is from I might either do morning or afternoon/evening times. I am going to try and do this on more regular schedule, perhaps fortnightly, or maybe even weekly if things line up. It's all an experiment, but I think this will be heaps of fun.

If you'd like to read about public package review, @jadeynryan gave a summary of her experience in a lovely blog post: https://jadeyryan.com/blog/2024-01-22_package-review/

Thanks again to @milesmcbain and @adamhsparks for their help in package review, and again for @jadeynryan for volunteering, and also for her work on a lovely package. Thanks also to the previous folks who chimed in on the comments and made me feel like this wasn't so bad an idea after all:

@michcampbell
@juliasilge
@hye @zkamvar
@dgkeyes @tanho @ngiangre

Cheers!

njtierney,
@njtierney@aus.social avatar

If you would like to submit your package for review, you can reply to this thread, or open an issue here: https://github.com/njtierney/streaming-ideas

Good question! I think if the package is working, (installs), and you've fleshed out some of the key features, and you are looking for feedback, it is in a good spot to review.

Collaborating on code with someone on the other side of the globe is kind of magical. I open some issues or draft a PR, go to sleep, and it's like a magical elf works through the night to finish my ideas before I wake up. @njtierney

@LeafyEricScott It goes both ways!

Any folks out there who use the {targets} package?

@njtierney and I have started working on the {geotargets} package, which hopefully will make it easier to use {targets} with packages like {terra}, {sf}, {stars}, etc. We would love your input! What are the current pain points? How have you solved them in your own work?

https://github.com/njtierney/geotargets

njtierney,
@njtierney@aus.social avatar

@elipousson @LeafyEricScott would love a PR, thanks!
