Tonight is radio programming night.

I'm equipping multiple families in my network/neighborhood with Baofengs, and some with T-Decks.

Tonight I'm programming them and printing + laminating my 2-page "uh oh" user guide.

Baofengs (or any common radio equipment) are NOT secure communication, but useful nonetheless.

Meshtastic devices are more secure (have encryption), but offer much less range. IMO, this is actually advantageous.

Help your neighbors. Make allies. Don't put it off.

so here’s a difference between savings accounts in germany and france i now understand (i think), specifically how the interest calculation differs

the average german savings account with immediate access (also called “tagesgeld”) comes with relatively low interest rates these days, with some online banks running new customer campaigns yielding 3% or more for a fixed period and reverting to something barely above 1% after.

this interest rate is applied daily. if you put 100 € on your tagesgeld account, it starts accruing interest the next day.

in contrast, the “default” french savings account, the livret a, has an interest rate that is fixed by the government. currently it’s 3% until at least 2025. the rules for how a livret a works are defined by the government, and banks must follow them to offer a livret a.

in further contrast, the interest calculation on a livret a depends on leaving funds on your account for longer periods. calculations are made on the 1st and 15th of each month, and interest is only applied on funds that have been on the account for the entire period since the last calculation; if i understand it correctly, at each of those calculations your current balance in the livret a becomes the “balance eligible for interest”, and every withdrawal until the next calculation reduces that eligible balance. you can’t balance this out by putting money back in, because new funds are only considered starting with the next calculation and interest period.

so if you for example shove 100 € on your livret a ahead of the 1st of a month, and then withdraw it again before the 15th, you don’t get any interest on that. if you want interest, you need to leave the 100 € on the account until the next interest period begins.

so in conclusion: the livret a is designed to have a stronger incentive for people to commit to their savings and leave them untouched for longer periods if at all possible, which makes sense considering those funds are used for loans that fund the construction of social housing and other state projects. i guess you want stability in the funds you’re using for your loans.
