Well that was quick...

Google Gemini already admitting that Google have siteAuthority.

@simoncox And nary a mention of a cited source... again. 🙄

Does anyone have any CHEERING news from around the world?

Even looking at the navigation on the BBC News website it's depressing.

I know these are important things and not ignoring them is important but... oooooff.

So any big environmental breakthroughs? Positive news about how we're NOT all doomed as a species?

Can Google be held accountable for what it shows in the SERPs, whether it's AI Overview or Featured Snippets, if it takes the data from third parties?

If someone dies from eating glue, drinking urine, or committing suicide based on the advice shown in the SERP, who's responsible?

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer I think the glue/urine/blinker fluid examples are all fun and games - and silly, attention-grabbing examples of "Look! AI got it wrong!"

What's more worrying is the misinformation. Google is - for better or worse - highly trusted by a lot of people.

If it says, prominently and authoritatively "X is true/good/bad" - people will believe that.

I've seen examples about queries regarding what you can/cannot take into various countries - which is more problematic than a glass of urine.

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer I mean the "make chlorine gas" to clean your washing machine could genuinely put people in danger.

Cracking story!

66 year old grandma makes her international debut in Gibraltar's second T20 international against Estonia, at the age of 66 and 334 days!

🧹Want to declutter your SERPs?
🗑️ Clean out all the 'Features'?
🔗 Yearn for the days of 'ten blue links'?

I built an app for that (well, a Chrome extension).

I'd love for you to try it out: https://optimisey.com/optimisey-search-simplify-your-search-results/

@simoncox I've not come across before - but love the idea. There are a number of 'Repair Cafes' popping up around here, which is great.

Not much to add... though I was VERY pleased with myself for fixing my car's rear tail-light the other day.

Not really saving the world - but saved me a few quid! 😄

Guess what I've discovered isn't fun... trying to update WordPress with Arabic characters in plugins that only function with the Latin alphabet.

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@Fizzle_Up Oh man... my sympathies.

I once worked on a site adding 30-40 new language and location sites and sudomains... and the UX considerations around Arabic were ENORMOUS.

That one sub-site took like 4-5 times as much work as any of the others. 😄

optimisey, (edited )
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox @Fizzle_Up In this example it was more that the right to left orientation of the text made some fairly fundamental design elements either not work at all - or need significant re-thinking.

Saw this on an former client's website data and thought "Oooh, I wonder what happened there?"

Turns out they're being acquired.

Surprised at how much traffic is driven by the stock market and traders.

Ok, diagnostic help please.

Why might a site work fine in a new browser, incognito etc.

But in an 'old' Chrome browser all the images hang and don't load (but otherwise the site functions ok).

Scratching my head a bit here (and no, I can't share URLs I'm afraid!).

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox Now, pleasingly (for me) I HAD thought of this one.

I've spent the morning faffing with cookies, caches and the like to no avail.

I think @jemjabella has helped me narrow it down to an issue with javascript (when isn't it, eh?). 😄

It's also hidden and only visible if you search on the page for the word "accessibility"?

Genuinely @searchliaison think this might be one to feedback to someone in the team?
