Damn, if only there were more than just the two options. I mean, we stop funding genocide and then Hamas immediately wins, that’s the only possible way it could go, right?
I have a loophole–or more accurately, an ash vent in my fireplace. It leads to a spot in my basement that is completely inaccessible without compromising the structural integrity of my home (it’s a block wall that holds up the fireplace and some key joists).
When I need to return the paperclip, I’d take a sledgehammer to the block wall and get it that way (I’d probably attach it to something easy to find before dropping it). The $5Mil will more than cover repairs, even if my house collapses.
If that isn’t legal, I’d just go down to my basement and tuck it between a floor joist and the floor above, plus hide a bunch of decoys in my basement to hide tracks. They would only find it by pulling up every layer of floor in the entire house, which would take much longer than 12 hours.
Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....
I’ve used both Linux Mint and Manjaro, and my Nvidia card has done fine in both. I switched to Mint from Windows because it was easier and faster to set up under Mint (Windows was missing a bunch of drivers and the OEM’s site didn’t have updated ones). The only configuration I had to do was select the proprietary driver (and Mint has a nice little GUI for that). If you’re on the fence, I highly recommend trying Mint.
Dual boot is definitely more tricky to get going. I just set up a Windows partition again to play a game that uses Easy Anti Cheat, and it took some time to have everything working happily.

One of the things you’re seeing these days are apps made with bloated frameworks, so they’re cross-platform and easy to develop. In theory it’s great that anyone can make an app for any device with little-to-no code required, but it results in apps with absurd load times, ad bloat, and usability problems. And that’s across the board (though FOSS seems to buck that trend a bit still).
As an example, my kid’s school uses an app called Seesaw. It’s straight-up garbage. It takes several seconds to open, the back button doesn’t work, etc. At least it’s not littered with ads, but it’s a small mercy.
The web is experiencing the same thing. 60MB of ad services being loaded with every click, ads taking up 90% of screen real estate, slow everything, etc. I use some older hardware, but even websites that are mostly text are unusable without a strict adblocker. Not just annoying to use, but completely unusable.
These big frameworks were developed for large, high-traffic sites like Facebook. In theory, they’ll work for your AI-generated blog, but they’ll suck to load if you host them with a $5/month hosting plan and load 300 ad-related things on each page.
The solution is to create native apps and websites, or at least use frameworks appropriate to the task. But that would require people to give a shit, so I don’t see that happening often outside of FOSS projects (which are often a labor of love).
The sad part is that he couldn’t put two and two together. Health problem interrupting your job? It’s not like poor people ever have to deal with health problems, they’re just lazy, right? /s
I think there’s an important distinction to make with this: contentment vs complacency. They’re similar, but distinct. Contentment resonates more with the gratefulness aspect of your statement, whereas “wanting nothing” leans more toward complacency. Contentment is more oriented with a sense of joy or peace, whereas complacency is apathetic and numb. Only one of those sounds like freedom to me.
In addition, I would argue that it’s impossible for a human to truly “want nothing” (sorry Buddhist friends). Even the most enlightened soul would desire to see peace throughout the world. In fact, if you truly wanted nothing, I don’t think gratefulness would even be possible–what is there to be grateful for if you didn’t want any of it in the first place?
I’m a dual citizen, currently living in the States. I can say with certainty that there is some lingering fear mongering around single-payer healthcare. Lots of Americans have this idea that healthcare in other countries is terrible. I’ve had people flat-out refuse to believe that hospital wait times for deadly emergencies don’t regularly exceed 6 hours in Canada.
I’m guessing that the people profiting from the current system in the US have done their best to convince everyone that it’s the best way.
