Up to the most infamous TOS episode, it’s time for Spock’s Brain!

“Brain, brain… what is brain?”

@andybroomfield That is one of my favourites.
(I do find it curious how in the 60's people over estimated the sophistication to run the heating systems of space colonies...)

Does anyone know why booting a kernel in qemu takes forever to enumerate CPUs in the guest? Example:

[ 0.161515] smp: Bringing up secondary CPUs ...
...
[ 19.231546] smp: Brought up 1 node, 128 CPUs

AMD host, and seemingly scales with ncpus^2 in the host.

@axboe Is it qemu/tcg or kvm that you're hitting the problem - I guess kvm?

@axboe I guess Paolo is probably a good bet to ask? But I guess if your lpj is screwy I guess it's a screwy clock, if you can find which clock...

And they're off!
So the two-horse race for the #generalelection2024 has started and already Rishi Sunak has made two mistakes. I have to agree with @peston's first prediction of a November election this would have given more time for interest rates to come down along with fuel and food. There would have been more time for more than just one person to enjoy the scenery of Rwanda. Secondly, why didn't he wait for 8 or 9 am this morning when there was less chance of looking like the gods were pissing all over him. #politics

@dick_turpin @mooch I think the Greens have a better chance of picking Tory votes up than the liberals ?
(I still don't get why he decided to do it outside in the pouring rain...)

What is the use case for instead of or ?

Is it worth using on a daily driver machine (laptop or desktop) or is it mostly for servers?

penguin42,
@penguin42@mastodon.org.uk avatar

@pauldoo @sprocket One thing I find is that XFS needs a bit of a hand to recover after a crash; while ext4 normally handles stuff automatically with it's journal; xfs often needs an xfs_rescue; it's not less reliable, it just likes you to do that manually; which needs more skill.

Just had to convince an #ai chatbot to let me speak to a human for my company's internal corporate it support desk.

It was, predictably, useless, just like every other automated support system I've ever interacted with.

But I earnestly wonder how much of that is because I, and people like me, independently troubleshoot and research before we try to bother a human, so we're just hitting the filtering function for people who refuse the read the instructions.

@growlph That's what makes AI helpdesks so great - they're no worse than the initial human support contact!
