Hi there, if you're referring to the recent case in Spain, the name/address of the terrorism suspect was actually given to police by Apple, not Proton. The terror suspect added their real-life Apple email as an optional recovery address in Proton Mail. Proton can't decrypt data, but in terror cases Swiss courts can obtain recovery email.

Setting a recovery email is optional, and you can read about other recovery methods here: https://proton.me/support/set-account-recovery-methods

@MoneroIsTheFuture We also provide an official Proton Mail onion site for use with the Tor network for those seeking anonymity.

It’s also important to differentiate that VPN is not classified as a communication tool in Switzerland — Proton VPN does not log IPs and there are no existing Swiss laws that can compel us to do so.

@MoneroIsTheFuture The identity and location of the activist was already known to the French authorities and the fact that Proton Mail was not able to hand over any messages even under legal order proves that our encryption works, and very likely of great assistance to the activist in this case.

Had they been using any other email provider, the outcome would have been very different.

@MoneroIsTheFuture @MarkAssPandi We compiled info about sending anonymous email here: https://proton.me/blog/how-to-send-an-anonymous-email

Regarding funding development, we're supported by subscribers, not VC investors, advertisers or selling user data to their parties.

@CatDad Hi Jeff, Proton currently uses AI in Proton Sentinel to help protect against account takeovers.

This is available for subscribers and off by default. Please note that this is not generative AI like ChatGPT, but rather a more traditional machine learning approach, used to prevent email abuse.

Any future applications will depend on community interest and demand.

@wonkothesane Hi Michael, it's important for us to use a mix of mainstream and decentralized channels so that we're not talking into an echo chamber and can reach those just starting their privacy journey.

It doesn't look like Signal offers unlimited broadcast channels yet, but we'll keep an eye out for any changes!

@protonprivacy are you next in queue to embrace the AI-for-all enshitification?
Please don't.

@rodricels Hi Rodrigo, Proton currently uses AI for Proton Sentinel (which is more traditional machine learning to prevent abuse rather than generative AI like ChatGPT) which helps to prevent account takeovers, even when an attacker has stolen your password.

Proton Sentinel is available for subscribers and off by default.

Any future applications will depend on community interest and demand.
