Lemmy.world grew from around 51000 total users the moment 3rd party reddit apps started to shut down on June 30 to 71000 total users at the time of this post (July 1). That’s a 40% growth in about 12 hours!...
I landed here after RIF stopped working on my device and followed RIF link. This will be my new place to find content and see aggregation. Here it is to the end of reddit that starts today! 🍻
I had the same issue, I think it is a server version issue. I started using Connect which has been working well so far, although there are some UI quirks I had to get used to.
It's not the kids, not the lurkers, not the mods... y'all just nice people. Lemmy's got a good vibe going... or at least enough windows that we can close if the vibe gets shit.
Supposedly I can subscribe to stuff from *fediverse accounts on other instances, in fact it's one of the main selling points of the fediverse, but I can't for the life of me figure out how....
It’s a bit finicky, but when this kind of search hasn’t worked for me, I’ve had success searching without the ! or just pasting the community’s URL into the search.
I played a game on lichess and thought i was doing ok for a bit, but it went downhill fast. I can't upload a GIF here, but a link the game on lichess is https://lichess1.org/game/export/gif/ZsZknVcD.gif
So I've been wondering, how do I see if I'm seing a post from a server that's defederated from the instance I'm registered on? Like for example beehaw, which defederated from lemmy.world.
When I mean learning I do not mean translating big sentences or something like that, I mean things like: “Is this japanese sentence correctly written? 雲の日が好きです” In this example it answered: "...
I moved my little guy to the f5 square to attack the king, and then white’s little guy appeared in f6 and my little guy disappeared. What is going on? Is chess.com rigging the puzzles so that we can’t solve them???
“All” will be different on different instances - it’s basically all of the communities/magazines that anyone on that server follows. On large servers this’ll cover just about everything but not on smaller servers. Plus there is probably a lot less cross-subscription between Lemmy and Kbin than within each. The two may also have different algorithms for the hot/active lists.
The scrolling thing is a bug with Lemmy. It’s been resolved with version 18 but some instances, including lemmy.world, haven’t updated yet.
Mine is the Army Men series. Objectively mediocre games at best but the concept of toy soldiers fighting over our yards and rooms has always been cool to me
Eternal Card Game - basically an online MTG clone. It’s always been small, and the userbase has been gradually shrinking since it started. I still think it’s a great game though.
I'm one of the people who has very recently tried Lemmy and decided to drop Reddit. Initially because I will no longer be able to use SyncForReddit, but now also because I just like the vibe a lot more here than Reddit....
Maybe just the “Local” tab not being very useful. Although if you can find a server that fits your interests that may not be the case. I just picked one that seemed well run.
I signed up on a smaller instance and only follow a couple of communities there, so I had to go out and search for things I was interested in. I pretty much just subscribed to anything that sounded remotely interesting, figuring I could leave later.
i mostly found stuff with browse.feddit.de and lemmyverse.net, as well as just going to the bigger instances and looking at the local lists for anything interesting. So I’m following communities across several of the larger severs - lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, kbin.social, sh.itjust.works, lemmy.ca - and a few smaller ones that sounded interesting or relevant. Also fedidb.org is a nice tool to see info about the fediverse in general, including stats on Lemmy and Kbin servers.
I keep feeling frustrated as valuable knowledge for my different hobbies over the last years became siloed away in corporate social media. I believe wikis could be a way out, but can we have decentralized, federated wiki software that can kind of talk among each other?
I could see a setup where each server is a separate wiki around a specific topic, and federation allows people from other servers to edit or comment/discuss. Pretty much like Fandom but federated. It would be beneficial in that people wouldn’t have to make a login for every wiki they follow, and may help discoverability.
PSA: while upvoting exists, to get the "move closer to the top" effect that reddit's upvote had, you need to click boost
a small difference, but important to how people use the site

Lemmy is so good right now for no particular reason
