rappo,

How’s that working out for us? How do you see it actually working for us?

Even before Trump, no one could break through the stranglehold the two party system has. There’s an entire segment of people who are neither centrist nor conservative who have been and will continue to be without a voice. Those people will continue to vote blue/centrist because it’s better than the alternative. Or they will continue to vote red/conservative because there’s no alternative.

The closest we’ve seen to a viable third party candidate was Perot over 30 years ago with 19% of the vote. And you could argue he got by on his “outsider” charm much like trump, rather than any decent ideology.

Keep money and PACs and lobbying in the mix and there will be no change. Keep voting in blue/red and we keep the money flowing… but there’s no conceivable way to vote them out.

I get that in this moment in time it feels like life or death for democracy and it’s anybody but Trump, but let’s imagine that’s all behind us and the threat of Trump is gone. What now? How do we actually get representation instead of two parties run by and for corporations? Because nothing anyone has done in my lifetime so far has made a dent.

rappo,

I do feel like giving up. But my question remains, what is the path forward? Let’s say I help “organize”, what does that look like? Protesting in streets doesn’t work in America, speaking with your money does… but I don’t have the money to compete with corporations and collectively we don’t, either.

sidebar: I’m currently at 0 internet points for my comment. Not saying it was you, it probably wasn’t, but my comment was genuine and not some shitpost or edgy hot take. I thought the reason we’re here and not reddit is (among many other things) because voting is used to highlight good conversations that we need to have (and to bury the bullshit), it’s not a hivemind agree/disagree button.

rappo,

remember that JWST doesn’t do visible spectrum and, regardless, it’s specialized for faint distant objects. From JWST’s perspective, Titan emits a lot of light. It’s kind of like using a telephoto lens to take a picture of your foot.

rappo,

Yeah. I ran it in docker for years and it was such a hassle compared to HAOS. The switch to VM was best decision I made regarding HA.

What are the most mindblowingly creative, inventive, or otherwise otherworldly albums you know of?

One of my favorite things to do while stoned is listen to albums that are really unique, artful, and/or jam packed with soul and energy, as in that head space music just hits completely differently and it just lends to me finding a deep love and appreciation for the art of music. What’re some of your favorites?

rappo,

I saw Sunn and Godspeed You Black Emperor at different times in the same venue (Brooklyn Masonic Temple) and they were both the best show and the worst show I’ve ever seen in my life, respectively. Walked out halfway through Godspeed, it was so bad. Anyway, Sunn O))) rocks

rappo,

Sorry, I didn’t phrase that clearly. Sunn O))) was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. GY!BE was terrible.

Sunn built up such an intensity and anticipation, and during the show they put a hell of a show. Fog covered the venue… they had vocalist Attila with them who was wearing a robe covered in mirror fragments and he had lasers on the end of each finger that he would bounce off the mirrors and into the crowd/fog. I’ve been to a few hundred shows and this light show alone would rank it up there, but the performance was something else too. It was the most intense and loud show ever (don’t forget your hearos, lol), you could feel your skin and clothing vibrate. Supposedly the Brooklyn Masonic Temple has no noise ordinance to follow because they’re grandfathered out of it, or something like that. It was loud.

With Godspeed You! Black Emperor I would have been better off if I stayed home and listened to low quality mp3. No stage presence, no engaging the crowd, nothing notable to say really. They sounded off and bored, like they were doing this because their family was held hostage. I don’t know what I expected, but it was at least decent sound quality. This was not long after they got back together, so maybe that played into it.

rappo,

Shut up, nerd! Let me have my gravitron

In-N-Out to close first location in its 75-year history due to a wave of car break-ins and robberies (apnews.com)

In-N-Out Burger says it will close its first location in its 75-year history due to a wave of car break-ins, property damage, theft and robberies affecting customers and employees alike at its only restaurant in Oakland, California....

rappo,

I was about to comment that I lived in Oakland for 5 years and it really isn’t that bad. Like any city, it has its bad parts that you need to avoid. But you cleared it up.

a large part of east Oakland

A large part of east Oakland is bad. Luckily, it’s easy to avoid… but not if you already live there.

Is the 1918 Spanish flu still dangerous?

I was watching a television show yesterday and the premise of the episode was that a terrorist group had broken into an old abandoned USPHS lab and stole samples of the original strain to use as a biological weapon. It got me thinking, is that particular version of the flu virus still particularly dangerous? I know H1N1 strains...

rappo,

Sorry you’re getting downvoted. I don’t know if I agree with you, but back in the golden ages of Reddit the rule was don’t downvote because you disagree, downvote because it’s a shit comment. I don’t think your comment was shit… I think we’ve brought way too much of modern reddit to lemmy.

rappo,

I know nothing about Spain’s political parties, and I’m personally not a fan of conservative parties, but just to point out the obvious:

abled supremacy

The whole reason this thread and news article exists seems to refute that. I know it’s only one data point, but the situation is notable on a global scale.

If a game adds or changes content outside of extra add-ons like DLC (such as a free update) does that content have to be reviewed by ratings boards and risk changing the rating of the game?

I was talking about bg3 and how a certain part could be changed to be much darker, and it occurred to me that it possibly could affect the rating of the game if they did (being vague purposely to avoid spoilers). But then I wondered “do things like that even have to be reviewed by the rating boards?” Because Larian has made...

rappo,

A few things:

  • Many (most?) ratings these days are self-assessed by the developer/publisher.
  • The review process has been heavily streamlined through IARC, so you can effectively get ESRB/PEGI/etc simultaneously. Governmental ratings (like GRAC in South Korea) still require you go through the government agency – but some stores like Epic or Oculus can effectively do this for you – and even then it’s still self-assessed.
  • Some of the storefronts offer help with ratings, in a way doing what a publisher would do, if you self-publish. You take a quiz to determine ratings and ask questions before the rating boards even know you exist.
  • Ratings boards don’t typically play the game. Sample screenshots and descriptions can be included in some submissions, especially if there’s a grey area or the submitter is inexperienced, but it’s often just apply and get your cert.
rappo,

not exactly, there was an ancestor who may have been Trump or Drumpft.

From his grandfather’s wikipedia entry:

Trump’s earliest known male ancestor is Johann Philipp Drumpft or Trump (1667–1707, parents or place of birth not recorded), who married Juliana Maria Rodenroth.

rappo,

No, they didn’t steal a car or speed off recklessly. They were arrested on site while someone else fled the scene.

Are we even reading the same fucking article?

rappo,

Do you mean Manos: The Hands of Fate?

MST3K made it famous in what is probably one of their best episodes.

rappo,

You should watch it if you haven’t! It’s one of their best eps. They even got together to do a Rifftrax version of it live in theaters.

rappo,

A Shield TV is probably overkill for you and the recommendations of a pi would do just fine, but if it’s in budget I say go for the Shield TV. Mine is nearly 8 years old and I haven’t had a single issue, streams 4k HDR, and runs so much better than any of the crap that comes with even the newest of TVs.

rappo,

If they’re not technical and you don’t feel like playing family help desk, you can’t go wrong with either synology or qnap. The downside with them is the hardware is just barely powerful enough for a NAS. If they start to get into self-hosting at all – pihole, home-assistant, minecraft servers, jellyfin, etc – they’ll quickly run into limitations.

If they’re somewhat technical but not a Linux guru, I’d add Unraid (slackware based, but 100% UI-driven) to the list. I’ve been running it for years and it’s been great. It makes running docker/VM a breeze on top of the hardware-agnostic setup of mixed drives that makes upgrading slowly over time painless.

rappo,

I run Arch btw

I don’t know if you were trying to be funny but that got a smirk out of me.

rappo,

I tried it earlier this year and it was nice, but lack of automatic transaction importing was a deal-breaker for me. It’s so tedious to go through all of your various accounts and run exports, especially considering just how shitty most bank/credit/etc UIs are.

They’ve been off and on working on or talking about Plaid support, which would probably solve all or most of my complaints (so I’m following the GitHub thread to get notifications): github.com/actualbudget/actual/issues/898

I keep my docker container updated and every few months take a peak to see if there are any notable improvements, but not really going to touch it until that feature gets added.

rappo,

Looks like a parfait / iced tea spoon. If I had to guess someone just thought it would look fancy or simply didn’t care.

If civilization continues to the year 9999, is the idea to go to year 10.000, or...?

It seems like it’d get increasingly impractical as the years go on to hundreds of thousands and millions of years to write them out that way, but then…I guess technically one may already do this with the preceding years, so future’s fair game for it?

rappo,

we should really update this to “After when some people thought Jesus was born but they fucked up by 4-6 years. Also why is there no year zero?”

AWSPTJWBBTFUB4YAWITNYZ doesn’t really roll off the tongue, though. Maybe it’s better if someone can translate that into Latin.

Edit: Google Translate says “Post cum quidam putant natus est Jesus, sed eruditionis 4-6 annis. Cur etiam annus nullus est nullus?” so I propose “Post cum”

rappo,

while I appreciate everyone naming their favorite companies, this is the only real answer to the question. It doesn’t matter at all which registrar you use, it’s about brand recognition, support, add-on services, and cost.

[source: friend founded his own (now defunct) registrar and I would help out. Even when a registrar goes out of business there’s no real risk, as there are plans in place to hand off customers to other sites]

rappo,

There is a spider that hunts other spider species and uses chirps to identify its own species so they don’t attack their own kind. A sort of spider shibboleth.
