I spent a good few hours a week ago digging into a linux driver for an accelerometer. It isn't detected, and I started playing with the kernel trying to figure out if I could easily patch the driver to work.

Someone in a forum asked about compatibility of the device with linux today, and I told them it's great but the accelerometer isn't detected.

Immediately someone jumped in with the reply: "You just don't know the right thing to install. Prompt ChatGPT and it will tell you." 🙄

I feel like I'm more neutral on LLM's here than most. I'm working on some projects to convert epubs/pdfs into nicely read audio books via speech synthesis, massive data analysis on leaked chat server logs, and creating GPTs that are prompted with legal documents for things like tenant's rights in an area that can help produce templates for forms and legal responses.

But like, so much of the trust in AI being some sort of magical blackbox is disconcerting.

While the politicians and NIMBY's were concerned about people camping outside and how that made them uncomfortable for the past few years, around 1500 people died in Multnomah County due to fentanyl overdose. Every few hours someone is dying due to overdose. This is not just unhoused people, but an epidemic affecting everyone in the community. Every single death is preventable, but instead of investing in real solutions programs keep being gutted to fund things like making the people most at risk of death criminals.

One thing I've changed my mind on as I've gotten older is that now I think rite of passage ceremonies are great. Counter cultures should adopt more of them. They are silly and cringe, but you can't transition to a new paradigm without them very easily.
