In case you were wondering what the “fix” in iOS 17.5.1 for those reappearing photos was, this is likely it.

saagar,

I haven’t spent enough time actually looking at what this code does to be sure, but my best understanding is this relates to running a task that scans your photo library folder on disk for orphaned files and pulls them into the Photos database.

saagar,

In iOS 17.5, they added some code to reset whether this had been run already. Presumably this would cause it to run again and pick up any new orphan files it found? Like, if you deleted a file from Photos so it removed it from its database, but it remained on disk somehow.

A slight re-organization of Priest's "Efficient Scaling for Complex Division" to make it compatible with "try to divide the dumb fast way inline, then branch to rescale only if necessary" while preserving scale invariance of rounding.

Also fixes it up to work for Float16, which the original approach does not.

Further optimization possible and pretty straightforward.

saagar,

@pervognsen @neilhenning @steve I thought “linear algebra” was remedial classes for people who never learned y=mx+b up to like halfway through high school

I don’t think I’ve noticed this before (maybe it’s new?) but my iPhone adjusts its time while flying to account for date zone shifts even though it’s in airplane mode. Perhaps this is based on GPS?

saagar,

It’s going to be hilarious if this is actually a side effect of countryd really wanting to know where your phone is so you don’t scam Apple of some App Store revenue

I am amused that Frankfurt has a separate check-in line for Americans which, as far as I can tell, is completely identical except someone put up a sign reminding people of the rules regarding taking firearms on planes

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something delightful about this list of "legitimate" uses of negative literals:

https://github.com/elm/compiler/issues/1773.

I think part of it is the circumstances that would compel users to construct such a list. Until that thread, it hadn't even occurred to me that someone would present a case against the existence of negative literals that required a rebuttal.

saagar,

@pervognsen @danluu Another case is of course when using twos complement and trying to represent INT_MIN

Europe pro tip: if you’re looking for actual condiments, the quickest way to get access to them is to not ask for seasoning (which is a surefire way to get silently judged and brought salt/pepper) but to tell them you want to make a Bloody Mary

saagar,

@icanzilb Might be tight. How far are you?

saagar,

@icanzilb Yeah that’s a bit too far for this trip. The rail lines also seem pretty bad? I don’t see any direct ICE line between Berlin and Munich and the speed also leaves something to be desired

saagar,

@icanzilb Like, I feel that this should be a 3-4 hour trip on high speed rail (which I might be willing to do) and yet it seems to take 6

Today’s airplane wtf: woman on plane in seat behind mine decided to have a detailed conversation with someone across the aisle about why she prefers her men circumcised

When is the screen size inflation going to stop. Make a smaller display you cowards

I might be biased but the flight paths for the final approach to land in SFO is my favorite. Often it crosses the bay, which is spanned by not one but several bridges, all visually interesting, then takes you right by the distinctive skyline of downtown San Francisco.

saagar,

If you’re lucky it might take you over a bit of the Pacific before turning back around to skim over the Santa Cruz mountains, which shimmers with recent rains in the afternoon sun. Then you’re over suburbia, which is far more palatable when going at 300 kmph.

saagar,

Once you get a glimpse of Apple Park and Shoreline you’re back over the bay along the inner coastline as you get closer and closer to the water. Almost dangerously close before a reclaimed runway appears beneath you at the last second. I’m not even mentioning the weather variety.

  • Radix trees
  • Hazard pointers
  • RCU

so many cool algos itching for a home

Is Google killing RISC-V support in Android? Not quite, but they are, at least for now, dropping support for RISC-V in Android's Linux kernel fork in what seems to be a setback for RISC-V hardware launching with Android anytime soon.

More details can be found in this article I wrote: https://www.androidauthority.com/android-drop-risc-v-kernel-3438330/

saagar,

@MishaalRahman Are the patches linked anywhere?

Mom: we have a mutex in Swift.

@steve @krzyzanowskim Ok so as per Sith tradition the rest must be eliminated right

Curious about how much longer your Pixel's storage chip will last?

Android 15 adds a new storage lifetime API, and it's already in use in Beta 1!

If you want to how to check the health of your Pixel's storage chip, read my guide on Android Police: https://www.androidpolice.com/android-15-check-storage-health/

saagar,

@MishaalRahman This is neat. However I am curious if it requires special permissions as it looks like an excellent fingerprinting surface

I've thought for a while now that Android should (and will) play a REALLY important role at Google for AI, so this reorg makes a lot of sense.

Every time I visit Southern California I have to wonder what drugs their urban planners were on

saagar,

The Maps view doesn’t do it justice. It is 40 meters tall. If you careen off the top ramp for whatever reason your car is going to become a pancake when it hits the ground (which is of course another freeway with more lanes than you have fingers on your hands)
