Lol now even appending “Reddit” to your web searches doesn’t make them usable, because all of the links point to subreddits that have gone private in protest.

Agree with the last boost. Apple don’t really make things I want any more, except my phone & I’m that guy who buys a 2y old model every 3-4y bc no way am I spending a grand on a phone that’s too big. My needs & Apple intersected for a brief but nice period, but as a dev they’ve gone back to costing too much for being too niche & awkward. But still, I respect that they (mostly) put their customers first and aren’t afraid to be an outlier in saying “no” to data collection even when it’s difficult

Just realized another gamedev I had some respect for and who seemed to be doing fine on the fediverse has stopped posting here some time ago and gone back to twitter fulltime. So disappointing

@eniko yep, quite a few have disappointed with their blindness to what that place represents now

Heretical question: Does it (still) make sense to use Git LFS instead of plain Git (possibly with shallow clones to avoid dragging in the whole history for all the big files)?

In my tests it seemed like that worked pretty ok?
They weren't super exhaustive, but for example one of the repos was about 29GB with LFS and had >450 commits just in the main branch.

Committing from shallow clones works (AFAIK didn't in the past) and after conversion repos are about half the size than with LFS

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel @MouseByTheSea I think these days a partial, blobless clone is better than a shallow clone, because you get all the history info, just not the blobs for it. https://github.blog/2020-12-21-get-up-to-speed-with-partial-clone-and-shallow-clone/

I have no idea how well this performs over time, or whether you can prune old blobs easily. I also suspect there’s no locking solution.

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel if you try it, would be interested to know how it goes

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel yeah I guess it makes sense that clone becomes a full repack of the objects

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel @dotstdy personally since adding storage is vastly cheaper than dealing with server CPU stresses I’m happy with the LFS trade off at our scale

I just spent what I feel is way too much money on a new case for my PC. It’s my work PC and the old case only has room for 2 fans. When the PC is under load it’s getting stupid hot in there (running an RTX 2080). Especially doing VR stuff in the editor, it smells burny and I couldn’t afford to replace the whole computer if I end up toasting the CPU or whatevs. I just hope the new case sorts the cooling out properly. I intend to put in at least 4 fans!

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@psychicparrot42 you will be able to truthfully say that you have doubled your fan base 😉

The UE editor is a bit of a hog, I often run with Realtime off and a FPS cap of 60fps to stop it burning the world down just on a static screen

@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Going to have to jump start the car again, battery is completely dead even though I replaced it not that long ago.

I really should have fired it up more often in the last 6 months but we have both completely gone off the idea of driving anywhere now, we're both just biking all the time. I really must just sell it - I've been keeping it as a backup because "what if?", but even that's no use if it's dead every time we think to try it 🙄

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Doomed_Daniel Yeah probably should have done that. But even better would be not having the car at all 😄

@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Games are far too hard to make 😔

Shelving another project because there’s no prospect of it getting to the finish line. Probably should have done it ages ago, but we’ve put so much effort into it and it kept feeling like we were just about to hit a stride that would make the difference. Instead it’s got to go in the “actually needs way more funding than we’re ever likely to have” pile.

Time for something much simpler, or at least with more reusable parts. Lessons were learned I guess

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Although I don’t regret us switching to UE, it’s been a contributing factor. Learning the (massive) engine, and spending time writing a bunch of needed libs, made it hard to judge what our actual production momentum really was, and it was easy to think “well, we’re getting faster at this, maybe it’ll work out”.

Also there’s so much you can do, it’s easy to get carried away. You get something that looks great quite quickly, until you realise how much work it’s going to take to fill the gaps.

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

All in all it’s been a bit disheartening. We reluctantly decided to abandon our previous project that was going quite well out of patent concerns, and it sucks to have to park another one.

But as painful as it is to start over (again), I don’t think it’s as bad overall as the constant gnawing feeling that you’re running an endless marathon where every day the finish line seems a little further away.

The fact that Apple has (probably) built the slickest and coolest looking VR/AR headset yet (if not the most functional re games) and watching people “integrate” them into their lives still makes me go “ewww” probably means they’re never going to be for me. I can’t imagine ever wanting to live that vision

Like, Minority Report looked rad so long as you didn’t consider what it really meant to use that UI day to day. Lots of things look cool on film but are rubbish in practice

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

The most desirable futuristic UI I’ve seen was in the Expanse, which unsurprisingly was still mostly screen based, just very flexible re device. They had occasional 3D immersion (holography) when it made sense but most of the time it didn’t.

Often the simpler interface is the right one even if you can do something “cooler”.

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Sure Google Glass was kinda dumb and creepy, but I think that design understood what it meant to integrate AR into actual normal people’s lives vastly better than any of the headsets that have come since. The idea that any well-adjusted person would want to participate in family moments wearing a ski mask is ludicrous and I almost can’t believe they’re trying to sell that as a thing

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@KeefJudge I agree. There’s the school of thought that people don’t know what they want until they see it, but I think anyone who has a good read on what most people want in their life would have totally shot this down. I really don’t know who it’s for except the weird nerds who need to have everything futuristic seeming

sinbad,
@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@angryantlers They were trying very hard to market it as a consumer thing as well. Form factor primarily: I’m calling it that a mask on your face is never going to be socially acceptable around other people in meatspace

It's been years but I'm still so glad I don't need to watch WWDC live anymore. Something about the Apple presentation cadence (do they drill people on it for consistency? Feels like it) makes my brain want crawl out of my skull and run laps round the house. I always desperately wanted a FFWD button and get it done in 1/4 of the time
