Cool edit. They originally said something along the lines of

I used to live near Antioch. It’s a large suburb with 5 BART stations and is home to many tech entrepreneurs in the Bay Area. Hardly what I would call a rural area.

Me and a friend played it side by side, we thought it was an absolute blast.

Character creation is probably the most D&D aspect of the game. You get almost every race and class from the PHB, although Variant Human is unfortunately not there, and many of the subclasses are unique to Solasta. There are 12 backgrounds, most of which add side quests to the main story, and all of which give some benefit to the character. Stats are determined with either 4d6 drop lowest, or point buy, and there’s an option for unlimited points. The game won’t punish you for choosing 18s in every stat, but that’s kinda boring. Character customization is kinda barebones. There are a few faces to pick from, like 30 hairstyles, and a wide color palette for skin and hair colors. Imagine Skyrim, but only preset faces.

Your background and personality traits determine your character’s attitude, and what dialogue they say. The game is almost entirely voice acted, which is really nice.

From a D&D perspective, it takes the combat rules directly out of the SRD, and it plays explicitly RAW. No bending the rules for the new guy because he didn’t know he couldn’t make a bonus action attack after drinking a potion. No scooting someone’s mini one more square over so they can do something cool.

Also worth noting, thanks to the strict adherence to the rules, rangers are actually viable!

There isn’t a ton of roleplay, as your dialogue options are usually just “which character says something right now?” There are a few points throughout the campaigns where you have to make choices, and those choices do matter to an extent, but they don’t make an impact on the overarching story. The main campaigns are pretty much linear, you just decide how to kill the enemies the game throws at you. The side campaign has a lot more in the way of role playing, because you do have to pick a faction to work with.

The game is a lot harder than typical D&D, thanks in part to the strict adherence to the rules, and in part to the fact that they have to balance out the insane amount of loot you get. Seriously, by the end of the second campaign, we were leaving +2 weapons and Winged Boots on the ground because we had that Tier 4 drip. Everyone had 24 for their main stat. The paladin had 28 AC, and a Cloak of Displacement. The sorcerer could fly, and had a +like 15 to hit. The rogue had two daggers each dealing 4d4 damage, so them sneak attacks were crisp. The cleric… could heal, when the party needed it.

All in all, it definitely scratched the D&D itch for me and my friend. I recommend buying the game and the DLCs.

@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

For the DLC, it really depends on what catches your fancy.

Inner Strength gets you Warlocks, Bards, and Monks, all extremely fun classes to play, along with the Dragonborn race. Just like 5e, the breath weapon is a bit underwhelming, but the class makes for a fantastic Paladin.

Primal Calling gives you the Half-Orc race, along with Barbarians and Druids. Barbarians can be overpowered at times, especially the Path of Stone subclass, which was very fun to play. Druids are basically walking health potions–their only really viable subclass (at least that I could tell) is the Circle of Balance, which is an extremely strong healer.

The Lost Valley is a side campaign that’s somewhat shorter than Crown of the Magister, but has much more replay value because of the different factions. It also gets you one new subclass for most classes.

Palace of Ice is a sequel campaign to Crown of the Magister, where you play with the same characters as before. It also gives you the Tiefling and Gnome races.

I would recommend Inner Strength over Primal Calling, and Lost Valley then Palace of Ice, unless you really want to play a Tiefling or something. If you’re more interested in making characters, get the race/class DLCs first. If you’re more interested in playing through the stories, get the story DLCs first. But also, there’s nothing wrong with playing the main campaign before buying any DLCs. That’s what I did!

    The lawsuit alleged that Roblox was in violation of its own terms of service, which states that “experiences that include simulated gambling, including playing with virtual chips, simulated betting, or exchanging real money, Robux, or in-experience items of value are not allowed.”

    According to the lawsuit, Roblox users, most of whom are minors, “first purchase Robux through the Roblox website, using either their own money, a parent’s credit card, or gift cards they possess.”

    The minor then “navigates to one of the” three aforementioned sites’ “virtual casinos” that “exist outside the Roblox ecosystem,” according to court papers.

    “Then, the user links their Robux wallet on Roblox’s website to the gambling website,” the court documents alleged.

    “And finally, once the minor-user’s wallet is linked, the gambling website converts the minor user’s Robux into credit that can only be wagered in their virtual casinos,” according to the lawsuit.

    “The gambling credits function just like chips in a brick and mortar casino,” the defendants alleged in court papers.

    “Users ‘buy in’ using their Robux, obtain chips, gamble until they lose their money or wish to cash out, and, if they increase their credits, they cash those credits out in exchange for Robux,” the lawsuit alleged.

    “This entire exchange of Robux occurs on the Roblox platform with Roblox’s knowledge and active support, and Robux never leave the Roblox ecosystem unless and until they are cashed out for fiat currency,” according to court documents.

    Is this gonna be like that one Canadian bill that Kermit the Frog was upset about, where it’s the use of slurs as a form of harassment that’s been made a crime?

    starman2112, (edited )
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Nope, you fell for Kermit’s propaganda. The point of the Canadian one wasn’t to force you to use people’s actual pronouns and names, it was to update the law to protect trans people from actual discrimination.

    Here’s some light reading

    cbc.ca/…/canadas-gender-identity-rights-bill-c-16…

    In fact, it doesn’t say literally anything about pronouns! You can use the wrong ones!

    It might raise harassment to hate crime if you make a point of harassing someone by using the wrong pronouns/name repeatedly, as a form of targeted harassment, but even then it would take several court cases before it had a chance to rise to that level.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Did you even read the article? In violation of what?

    If I say my pronouns are they/them, and you refer to me with she/her pronouns, that does not, and will never, constitute a crime. You’re either willfully ignorant of what C-16 actually did, or you’re willfully spreading transphobic propaganda. Either way, I’m done with this argument.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    My response is always to use whatever pronouns the person I’m talking to says are right. If it’s all alt-right troll, oh well. Maybe they’ll have half a moment of self reflection and realize how ridiculous it would be for nonbinary folk to lie about their pronouns all the time, day in and day out. Maybe they’ll realize that it would be exhausting having to lie just for the sake of… attention? Which wouldn’t make sense in the first place, because unfortunately the majority of attention that you get from being nonbinary in public is explicitly hatred.

    I know that hoping for conservatives to actually reflect on how they make people feel is a pipe dream, but if a man can’t dream, what can he do?

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    You’re allowed to be a rude ass. You’re not allowed to harass.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    First you would have to use the wrong pronouns for me repeatedly. Then I would have to file a complaint. Then we would have to go to court. The court would have to rule that what you did constitutes discrimination and harassment. If they do, there would be an order for you to apologize, or go to sensitivity training. You would have to refuse to do either, and then another court would have to determine whether what you did constitutes a hate crime.

    This is not a low bar.

    It’s been six fucking years. Show me literally one person who’s being convicted of a hate crime because of C-16, who only used the wrong pronouns for someone.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    So we’re in agreement that if you intentionally harass someone, you may be charged with harassment, and that simply using the wrong pronouns while not harassing someone isn’t harassment. What are you upset about again?

    starman2112, (edited )
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    If a court decides it’s harassment, then you could be charged with harassment. No court is going to charge someone with harassment because they simply didn’t know what pronouns to use. The burden is on me to prove that you are intentionally using the wrong pronouns, even though you know the correct pronouns, in an effort to discriminate against me because of my gender identity.

    Again, show me literally anyone who has ever been jailed for using the wrong pronouns.

    Again, I don’t know what you’re upset about. It is as clear as possible. Don’t do something that you know a court of law would consider harassment. It really is that simple. If you know that what you’re doing could be considered a crime in a court of law, don’t do it. If you don’t know that what you’re doing could be considered a crime in a court of law, go ahead. If you know that what you’re doing is gonna upset someone for no good reason, don’t do it. If you don’t realize that what you’re doing is gonna upset someone, go ahead and do it.

    If I say my pronouns are, in fact, they/them, you have absolutely no reason not to use them. Don’t say you don’t believe in pronouns. Everyone has pronouns. You have pronouns. If you don’t want to use the right pronouns for me, that’s fine. But don’t intentionally use the wrong pronouns for me, after I’ve told you what the right ones are, as an attempt to make me feel bad.

    It can’t be any simpler. Don’t fucking harass people. It’s not confusing. You may be confused as to why someone would have pronouns that you don’t like, and that’s fine. You don’t have to use them. You can even use the wrong ones. Just don’t do shit that’s gonna get a judge to say “you’re harassing this person with your ridiculous antics, cut it the fuck out.”

    It literally cannot be simpler. Just do what you’re already doing, but do it for trans and nonbinary people too.

    starman2112, (edited )
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Here’s one case

    them.us/…/canadian-court-rules-misgendering-human…

    So yeah, intentionally using nicknames and pronouns that someone has explicitly said they do not want used is both a dick move and illegal. The punishment was, of course, not jail time.

    The tribunal ordered Buono Osteria to implement a formal pronoun policy, as well as mandatory diversity and inclusion training for all managers and staff. The restaurant and specific offenders responsible for the behavior will pay Nelson $30,000 in damages, according to the CBC.

    Don’t get it twisted though. Nelson didn’t just decide to take them to court for easy quick money. They tried to get their manager to use the right pronouns and cut the nicknames out numerous times, until the restaurant fired them. This is absolutely not a case of someone accidentally using the wrong pronouns and being punished for it, this was legitimate, actual discrimination based on this person’s gender identity.

    Also another case. Not surprisingly, normal, functioning people can see the difference between genuine expressions of gender, and alt-right trolls.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Completely and totally irrelevant in this discussion. Only one case has been brought to the CHRT based on neopronouns, and it was dismissed.

    starman2112,
    @starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

    I mean, kinda? Like, you could say that the law forces you to not throw rocks, but really the law only cares about you throwing rocks at other people and their things. Nobody is gonna call the cops on you because you called someone a ma’am when they’re actually a sir, unless you do it repeatedly as a form of discrimination.

    You can’t force me to use the right pronouns for you, because we’re just two dudes passing on the street. If I was your boss, it might be a different story.

    I always thought it was called "learning" and that people enjoyed it (lemmy.world)

    Like, why wouldn’t people be interested in knowing that the African slave trade of the colonial period actually started with Jewish kids, but they all died in the African climate of Sao Tome, so the Portuguese started buying slaves from the Congolese, which they captured from neighboring tribes, to work the fields??
