jQuery plugins depended on jQuery, and when jQuery went out of favor, they ended up in the junkyard.

There is all sorts of componentry built exclusively on React, limiting it to React-based sites. As React goes out of favor, they will end up in the junkyard. (Same with any framework-specific extension.)

But with Web Components... it seems like the story will end differently. If they are built without dependencies, they might just live as long as the web does.

@chriscoyier agree with the general idea here but I also think any dependency will rot if not maintained. Even if it uses only web standards the ecosystem around it moves and so it will rot. Eg it might use a CSS layout approach that goes out of favour, or a style of API (callbacks vs promises), or depend on a feature that becomes a security risk (SharedArrayBuffer). But these risks are minimised if you stick to web standards.

    I’m really excited and proud because a game I worked on just won a Freeplay award! It was a jam game originally, and then T-Dog Extreme polished it to heck. It’s called “Bin Chicken has a go”. I made some of the game systems, the music and the sound effects.

    @timClicks yeah absolutely go for it. The ffmpeg thing is just a demo because it’s easy to find the wasm binary. If you want to do it headless (without the visual terminal) have a look at https://runno.dev/docs/wasi/

    Messing around with local LLMs. For the same model (WizardLM 13B, q4_0) and general settings, my M1X MBP 64GB (gpu_layers 1) can do 29 tokens per second, but my AMD 5800X + GTX 3080 (gpu layers 32) can only do 7 tokens per second... I would have expected the PC to be faster cause of the GPU but apparently not?

    @chendo @mattdarveniza might be video memory bound? Apple silicon has a shared memory architecture so it can use most of that 64gb as video memory.

    @decryption if I knew what happened to my 2010 PC (I think I gave it to my sister?) then I would absolutely give you one! Haven’t seen one of these in a long time. Good luck!
