Maker of music and software and some other things. Player of games. Student of irony.

I'm probably not likely to exactly parrot the exact opinion you have without asking difficult questions, making observations out loud, and maybe going on a few tangents. So, maybe it's better if you just block me now for not being exactly like you, instead of doing it later when you're having a bad day.

I'm the guy who still masks in public and continues to be bothered by humanity's response to COVID. But I am not upset about redefining the term "airborne transmission" to be more accurate.

Also, Pluto isn't a "planet," a tomato is a "fruit," and we don't have a clear enough definition of "sandwich" to determine whether a hot dog is one or not.

Maybe someday that will be resolved once and for all — by redefining the definition of "sandwich."

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg I recommend just using the word "handmeal" and avoiding the whole issue.

I've got nothing against TikTok in particular, just anything that makes money by selling the eyeballs of its users. Ban it all and I will be happy.

@nyquildotorg Obvious power play by US based services to protect their monopoly is obvious and depressing. Someday this will be reported on as the mostly uninteresting socioeconomic conditions that set us up for the hypersurveillance dark times...

I saw an old post today about the perils of being a nerd going through TSA and was reminded of flying home after Google I/O, removing gadget after gadget from my bag.

Like a magician pulling handkerchiefs out of their pocket.

I thought TFW meant "that face when" for decades, because every single one of them I ever saw featured a gif of someone making a face.

@nyquildotorg Filed alongside "FTW", also a constant source of amusement.

back on Google+, I had this collection of posts called "You Pay a Company to Manage Your Passwords for You?" where I'd post every goddamned stupid thing password managers did for several years.

I actually use a commercial password manager (for reasons,) but I'm not happy about it (for reasons.)

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg I love my little paper password book. It holds the first half of my passwords and as far as I know the NSA hasn't yet found a way to slurp data from it automatically.

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Nah, fuck it. Basically 100% of the passwords can be recovered simply by spoofing my SIM card and doing a password reset, and I can just call Schwab on the phone. :D

That's the other thing. Why am I being so careful with passwords, when the site's idea of security is "send a text"?

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg The down side is that the procedure for making a backup of the passwords is "buy a copier"... :(

When my dementia fully sets in, I suspect the only thing about my life I'll remember is how stupid I thought it was that they used "feardotcom.com" for the website for the movie FeardotCom (2002) about a website called fear.com

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg the fuck? If this isn't connected somehow to Fear The Record they should get sued

tekhedd,

@nyquildotorg Fear was on the Repo Man soundtrack, which is largely why I remember them at all.

I don't like linking to AI nonsense, but I feel like This AI-produced "Dune, the Broadway musical" perfectly encapsulates the disdain I feel for the Broadway musical they made out of Gregory Maguire's truly excellent novel, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

@nyquildotorg I have, for decades, reserved judgement on movies/musicals/etc made from books. The Netflix serial adaptation of "Good Omens" was for me the clincher. It's great. Everything about it is great. And they didn't include the Other Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse, which IMO is a sin that strongly indicates that they weren't the surviving author's idea, and the studio didn't get the joke.

Roku apparently watched too many of their customers watch Black Mirror, I guess. "It'd be financially irresponsible not to inject ads into customers' PS5s..."

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg "Roku is at least looking to make sure that it's serving you relevant ads"

That's a really, really soft spin on "Roku will be tracking your third-party app usage with fine granularity."

Was everyone absent the day Google introduced Incognito? Its only purpose was keeping things out of your local browser history, and not being logged in to remote services. It didn't make you activity undetectable or unknowable to Google...

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Well, it just. I mean yes you know your provider and all the sites can track your visit, but... it just seems so sleazy for the browser itself to track you.

"The technology allows customers to skip checkout altogether by scanning a QR code when they enter the store. Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped."

@nyquildotorg Over the years, I have seen many "oh this thing feels dystopian" but this on top of the idea of Amazon applying their monopoly tactics to my food supply is the most chill-inducing thing I've ever experienced in a real-world "this is actually happening" cyberpunk dystopia way.

I found a pair of stud earrings with large green stones nestled in knothole of a tree last night while I was taking a walk.

I disinfected the hell out of them and am wearing them right now.

The holes in my ears are 14 gauge, so I never considered getting ordinary studs before, but these guys have extra large plastic disc backers and sit happily in the too-big holes.

Will have to see if those disc backers are easy to come by...

tekhedd,

I still can't get over the cognitive dissonance in everyone yelling for a decade about how they wanted Twitter to just show them a chronological feed of every post, and then a mass migration occurs and the very same people demand that the fediverse not do that, to do all the things that Twitter used to do instead

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Maybe the same thing that causes people who moved away from California because of high taxes and a government bureaucracy that is collapsing under its own weight to immediately start pushing for whatever state they now live in to start behaving exactly the same way. Um... what's the name for where you do the same thing over and over expecting different results, again? I forget.

Saw a headline about a breakthrough where they coaxed an AI to let them read ancient damaged-and-unreadable Roman scrolls. I shouldn't have to ask this, but are we sure the AI isn't just predicting what the next word in the scrolls might be rather than actually "reading" it?
