Maker of music and software and some other things. Player of games. Student of irony.

I'm probably not likely to exactly parrot the exact opinion you have without asking difficult questions, making observations out loud, and maybe going on a few tangents. So, maybe it's better if you just block me now for not being exactly like you, instead of doing it later when you're having a bad day.

My advice: enjoy the new "web" search option on Google while you can. No way that's sticking around.

Sometime in the last 5 years, I watched The Fifth Element (1997) while high on THC.

I distinctly recall seeing it in the theater with a bunch of guys, one of whom vehemently hated it.

THC often makes it harder for me to "suspend belief," and amplifies my noticing of individual filmmaking choices.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure my friend in 1997 was just high, because that movie is a mess and I never noticed it until seeing it high.

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg I usually think of THC as the drug that lets you overlook the flaws in music, but you're right. I recall at least 3 movies in the last 5 years that I've seen on THC and thought "Wait, this movie is really broken and/or inconsistent to the point that it's very distracting" that I had always just glossed over before. Fifth Element is definitely one of those movies, although now I see it as more a set of comedy setpieces and less a "movie".

By 2030, half of the products Apple sells will inexplicably be Pencils that only support small subsets of the variety of different iPads that make up the other half of the products they sell.

In which time zone does the Unicode Technical Committee record their meeting minutes?

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg GMT sounds like the logical choice... Or... All of them at once?

The other question: are their meeting notes utf8 or utf16?

I'm not sure what the "we need to hard fork Mastodon" proponents are expecting, but Mastodon's problems far exceed politics.

Talk to anyone working on any other ActivityPub based platform how much of their time is spent dealing with Mastodon's actual technical brokenness, and then evaluate whether forking Mastodon is really the right approach.

If you want to make a better Mastodon, please don't start by inheriting all of Mastodon's poor decisions on day 1.

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Really, all you need is to see that it's built on Rails, and you can save a lot of time and move on to "well how shall we start on the rewrite" IMO. :D

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@scribe @nyquildotorg Well, I like C# a lot, or I used to before it started trying to be every other language and Microsoft started really making it unpleasant to do dev on non-windows platforms. So... again it comes down to whether they have the discipline not to use all the "kewl" features right?

For end users managing a deployment, almost anything is better than Rails really. Even, maybe, Javascript.

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@scribe @nyquildotorg In the sentence "almost anything is better than Rails", I'm thinking "OK so what about Python". Speaking of things that start out fun to develop and then turn into a nightmare upon deployment... :D

Switch 2 reportedly replaces slide-in Joy-Cons with magnetic attachment

Ok, but will they have d-pads so I don't have to buy janky 3rd-party garbage? (Wait... I bet the magnetic attachment system is specifically to prevent janky 3rd party garbage.)

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg It's tempting to say "but I like the slide-in joycon attachment"! But that's because Nintendo makes things I like, so you can say that about most of the things they've ever done and eventually discontinued, so I should probably relax. :)

Coworker: I need some fresh ideas. Do you have a moment to talk?

Me: Fresh ideas! OK... um... Sandals that are also a wifi hotspot! Five-wheeled cars! Pet food cans that are also edible pet treats!

Coworker: Just call OK

I love how the switch will have an update ready, and it won't let you back into your suspended game, instead force-quitting and rebooting to install. Hope you saved! Of course it'll still let you into the STORE because that's more important than an update.

I'm the guy who still masks in public and continues to be bothered by humanity's response to COVID. But I am not upset about redefining the term "airborne transmission" to be more accurate.

Also, Pluto isn't a "planet," a tomato is a "fruit," and we don't have a clear enough definition of "sandwich" to determine whether a hot dog is one or not.

Maybe someday that will be resolved once and for all — by redefining the definition of "sandwich."

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg I recommend just using the word "handmeal" and avoiding the whole issue.

@nyquildotorg what the heck are ladyfingers even? I thought they were a cookie

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg ah! For a second I thought there was a kind of maybe a sandwich called a ladyfinger and now I feel like there should be

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg sandwich cookies, definitely. The argument being, I suppose, whether sandwich cookie is a subset of sandwich. Which I have no stake in so 😄... Just look yummy though (I believe that is the word) and now I want cookies

@nyquildotorg Obvious power play by US based services to protect their monopoly is obvious and depressing. Someday this will be reported on as the mostly uninteresting socioeconomic conditions that set us up for the hypersurveillance dark times...

back on Google+, I had this collection of posts called "You Pay a Company to Manage Your Passwords for You?" where I'd post every goddamned stupid thing password managers did for several years.

I actually use a commercial password manager (for reasons,) but I'm not happy about it (for reasons.)

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg I love my little paper password book. It holds the first half of my passwords and as far as I know the NSA hasn't yet found a way to slurp data from it automatically.

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Nah, fuck it. Basically 100% of the passwords can be recovered simply by spoofing my SIM card and doing a password reset, and I can just call Schwab on the phone. :D

That's the other thing. Why am I being so careful with passwords, when the site's idea of security is "send a text"?

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg The down side is that the procedure for making a backup of the passwords is "buy a copier"... :(

When my dementia fully sets in, I suspect the only thing about my life I'll remember is how stupid I thought it was that they used "feardotcom.com" for the website for the movie FeardotCom (2002) about a website called fear.com

tekhedd,
@tekhedd@byteheaven.net avatar

@nyquildotorg Fear was on the Repo Man soundtrack, which is largely why I remember them at all.
