Dark Tower series is actually what put me off him. Individually as separate books? Fantastic reads.
Together as a single universe? Messy, egotistic, and derivative.
I wish he stopped the gunslinger series past the first book. Just my opinion, though
Hi all, if you're trying to build lemmy from scratch, on debian (not ubuntu), and you're following this guide: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/from_scratch.html...
Soaring temperatures. Unusually hot oceans. Record high levels of carbon pollution in the atmosphere and record low Antarctic ice. We’re only halfway through 2023 and so many climate records are being broken.
If one were to take limits to the derivatives of those same integrals in polar coordinates, one could make some pretty nice spirals I bet. I dunno. Anyway, I'll take a cheeseburger please.
My ex from Norway mentioned how unusual it was that so many places and people here fly our flag (USA), so I was curious to hear what it's like for others here on the fediverse.
I personally have nothing against the concept of a 'car'. They're the ultimate freedom¹ vehicle that appeal to the anarchist in me; in the sense that you have this mobile device that takes you pretty much anywhere at incredible speed and luxury (radio, heating, cooling, reclinable bed) that is a pinnacle of over a hundred years of engineering.
I do have an axe to grind with cities built around cars. Cities are where people come together to converse, play, trade, and live. They greatly appeal to the communist in me, where people build sustainable democratic communities that thrive on the fruits of everyone's labours. Cars compromise the safety and tranquility of this ideal, and I wish cars were just used outside of cities to get from one town or village to another. Then you go park them outside the city, and walk/cycle/tram to where you want to go in the city.
1: No I'm not a flag waving nut, nor am I american
I've been so used to judging a post just by its popularity on reddit, but it's actually so much more useful to have an idea of the downvote ratio. I'm glad we have that here....
Everytime I loomed at my most upvoted comments/submissions on reddit, it would just be populist low effort crap that I wrote.
The meaningful insightful comments that I wrote barely got more than a handful of votes.
The voting system really isn't that indicative of anything in my opinion, other than how willing we are to lower ourselves to pander to the lowest common denominator.
Yuzu (as well as Ryujin) are incredible Switch emulators you can run on your PC. That sub was a bastion of getting your own "nintendo" system up and running, with a couple of fancy new Zelda releases.
Reddit's strategy of antagonizing app writters, moderators, and millions of redditors is good news for reddit alternatives like KBin and Lemmy. And not just them! The fediverse has always grown in waves and we're at the start of one.
Previous waves have led to innovation but also major challenges and limited growth. It's worth looking at what tactics worked well in the past, to use them again or adapt them and build on them. It's also valuable to look at what went wrong or didn't work out as well in the past, to see if there are ways to do better.
Here's the current table of contents:
I'm flashing!!!!!
But first, some background
Don't tell people "it's easy"
Improve the "getting-started experience"
Keep scalability and sustainability in mind
Prioritize accessibility
Get ready for trolls, hate speech, harassment, spam, porn, and disinformation
Invest in moderation tools
Values matter
This is a great opportunity – and it won't be the last great opportunity
Wow the comments are are all nested under the same parent, without hierarchy.

I've noticed in the explosion that we are getting duplicate communities in multiple instances. This is ultimately gonna hinder community growth as eventually communities like 'cats' will exist in hundreds of places all with their own micro groups, and some users will end up subscribing to duplicates in their list....
I don't like the idea of a voting system for mods, as it can be gamed very easily by bot accounts. Democracy is sadly under threat due to AI, and so I think the wall-gardened approach might be necessary: users choose an instance of north that suits them, and if the mod is a dick, then those users let the mods of the other north instances (under that super community) know, and the mods of other instances make the decision.
They might, but you will still be helping people, and if at a later date a court mandates that the authors of the training data be compensated for their actions, or if the corpus is released into open source repositories -- then I'd still call that a win for humanity.
Thanks for sharing. I checked out a few other bots in different languages, but the typescript one seemed really nice and easy to setup. How much resources does it use typically?
