I'm thinking of starting a new collection: , but I'm looking for a few good books that cover the topic and are suitable for a relative beginner.
Any tips?
@philately

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately Michel makes a small English version German Empire book, it’s not super specialized but wonderfully arranged. It’s also a relatively thin book and not a huge tome. Unless you’re looking to collect modern or East/West Germany it’s a fantastic start.

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately The two volume German catalog? If so, it’s much more specialized and has a lot more info - so tell your bank account to calm down, you did good 🤣

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately The bulk of my collection is in boxes and boxes of dealer cards as well 😂

@protonvpn am I correct in thinking that Proton VPN cli doesn't work on a headless install (raspbian)?

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @protonvpn I'm not familiar with protonvpn, but I use a combination of gluetun + docker, which works well. I think it's pretty flexible so if proton uses remotely standard configs I would think it might work as well?

I just got these Hovkrats boxes from and plan to stuff them full of bags with . They would probably work with many as well @philately

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately here’s the question - what size glassines fit best? 🤔

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately I don’t have a list of sizes handy but they are numbered and standard…most of my collection is in #3 glassines and size 102 dealer cards for instance, as they fit well in the same size box. Here’s the glassines available from one of my favorite suppliers, they might list the size:

Soon you’ll be buying them in boxes of 1,000 😉

Welcome to the philatelic community - it’s a great hobby with great people. What do you collect?

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately Yep. That's what happens. Start with one thing and it grows…

turngren_phila,

@jarulf @philately Take it as slow as you like. The point is enjoyment! I also came into this via an inheritance...I had zero interest in stamps until I started researching my late grandfather’s collection solely for the purpose of trying to sell it…I ended up loving the research so much that I stuck with it and now collect a variety of areas. (And of course I kept his collection as well, which started with my great grandfather.)
