had a dream where i was violently sexually assaulted after investigating some sort of issue where Windows broke app compatibility with a community developed driver that used Intel ME to draw on-screen display widgets and in the end I think the Windows part frustrated me more

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

it was actually really cathartic because in the usual type of sexual assault dream i do not resist and after waking up have to live with myself knowing that i kind of enjoyed in the dream, and in this case i fought back, which was the first time it ever happened

whitequark,

but i think it's extremely funny that i had an opportunity to directly compare "intel has updated me firmware so that a community written driver cannot use it as a confused deputy that writes to a framebuffer" and "some girl doesn't take 'no' because 'she's already undressed' and keeps physically attacking me with my fighting back doing nothing" and i'm more frustrated by the former than the latter

@jaiden I'm very not desensitized, I think I have them often but normally just don't remember them, so when I do it usually breaks me until I buy a gram of ketamine and do it all in a long series of dissociative fugues or sth

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@jaiden but the Windows part is STILL upsetting <_<

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

the other reason computers were more frustrating is that i took a video of her assaulting which because it wrote to the previous destination (her fileserver, where i put a recording of the ME driver malfunctioning) and i kept trying to download it while she was doing it and it had a bunch of javascript preventing me from getting a download link

infuriating

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

me: "where's the download link puts elbow in her general direction where's the FUCKING download link I don't want your fucking menu"
her, seeing me do it: completely unconcerned and gleeful confident in the belief that what she's doing is not only right but also righteous

I've received my first sample from the commercial run of Glasgow Interface Explorer https://glasgow-embedded.org for evaluation

it is beyond excellent. it exceeds any standard I could possibly have for it. the team (1bitSquared and everyone else who collaborated) working on it deserves the highest praise

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

I often see people refer to Glasgow as "my" project, and while I started it, I do not have the diverse set of skills and resources necessary to bring a hardware manufacturing run to completion. others have, probably, done more work on it than I did, and this work is excellent

the photographs do not do it justice. this is about as close as you can get to Apple level of finish, if you do not have Apple level of money. I have never imagined that I will be honored with such an investment of effort into what started as a small and a little silly project

if you assemble it right (using a square) you can barely feel the seam between the halves
the LEDs are bright and cleary distinct thanks to light pipes
the E-STOP button is clicky with a report you will not miss or mistake
the custom cable assemblies are exactly what I wished for

happy mailing list membership reminder day!

@whitequark I don't have a ton of experience with migen or Amaranth, but I've really enjoyed reading about it and Litex. I've been looking at other HDLs and I found spade. I was curious if you've heard of it before and your thoughts: https://spade-lang.org/

@curiousmuch I have not

current status: preparing to deploy an absolutely batshit quadratic-puppeting implementation where Discord users appear to talk in an IRC room through a Matrix room

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

i have deployed it, on -lang and

now when someone posts a thing on IRC, it gets reposted on Matrix, and then from Matrix on Discord

and then if someone replies, all the other way around too

i'm amazed this rube goldberg machine works

just realized i reduced another huge software engineering problem to compiler development

and guess what i can do quite well? that's right, make compilers!!

the next-generation glasgow communication infrastructure (on-chip and off-chip) will be entirely defined by a schema, which is also a language grammar, that will guide how messages are passed between components

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

this actually seems generally useful, it'll probably be a library under the GlasgowEmbedded/ umbrella

whitequark, to random
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

the mods of /r/welding gradually ramped it up over a few years and the current logo is really unsubtle

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

the population is almost exclusively blue collar workers and no one complains about it except for a few bigots here and there, it really drives in that the stereotypes are inaccurate

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@zippy1981 yeah makes sense

i really need to add SCSI to Glasgow

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

fortunately while moving to the UK i have saved all of the weird old computer stuff that i had before, so testing should be a breeze, maybe?

You think you have a reasonable grasp on C, then someone goes and writes:

[0x00 ... 0x17] = &&l_int

and you're like ???

(from https://github.com/quartzjer/cb0r/blob/master/src/cb0r.c)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@ve7fim oh that's really cute

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@ve7fim @mos_8502 there is no alternative to this syntax if you want a certain level of performance. no one uses this to be cute
