i've never really understood the "human brains are such pattern matching engines!! evolutionarily we are tuned to recognize them everywhere" in parascientific publications. like this is true in the same sense that "transistors are devices that control current with charge" is true

when you are publishing a statement like that you are trying to convey something that isn't in the information you state, in the hopes that the reader has the same misunderstanding as the writer, and that both would come away feeling satisfied about this. i dislike it

Philips electron optics engineering at it’s finest:

  • bottom left screw is fine
  • top left screw IS ON TOP OF A TRACE so they put insulating washers under the metal ones
  • right screw is ON TOP OF A PAD so there’s a NOTCH in the washer you line up with the solder blob on the yellow wire, source alignment coils short to gnd if you don’t

Mechanical drawings show insulating washers but no notch ofc

PCB is screwed into lead x-ray shielding because 200kV electrons travel down the tube in the center

Picture of screws used to hold PCB in. Insulating washer on the bottom of the screw.
Picture showing the notched washer installed next to the yellow wire.

Since announcing the idea of #Matrix 2.0 at #FOSDEM, we've been busy building out full real-world implementations for folks to play with, and today we're super excited to take the wraps off Matrix 2.0: The Future of Matrix. https://matrix.org/blog/2023/09/matrix-2-0/ 👀🎉🎊🍾👀

kind of scary how suddenly your body goes from "in its prime" to "noticeably composite"

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@flacs what happen?

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@flacs oh I see

(want my perspective on the original toot?)

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@flacs this body has been hurting since forever (fibro) so for me getting old is actually getting to learn all the ways bodies work and why and suffering less

also i think i might be unmaking fibro bit by bit, which would be a fantastic achievement if it works (and i think i can make it substantively work)

I had this prolonged discussion with @eisenhorn yesterday on the storage design. I'm poking at re-implementing in a sane way and we were chatting about KV storage vs RDBMs.

My current KV of choice is go's badger. His suggestion for a RDBM was mysql. He made a few very good points on how ActivityPub storage is relational in general and how using SQL would simplify a bunch of things straight on (lemmy uses postgres FWIW).

My reasoning was that a KV store ...

whitequark,
@whitequark@mastodon.social avatar

@farcaller you can use json over postgres too, no? with indexing
