A long time ago I was wondering what the regexes in awk's /regex/{code} are for. Like, why would you need those?

Somewhat later I was wondering why some tools output things like:

Key: <key1>
Foo: <foo of key1>
Bar: <bar of key1>
Key: <key2>
Foo: <foo of key2>
Bar: <bar of key2>

Like, there's no convenient way to parse these in a pipeline!

And then I realized that's what /regexes/ in awk are for.

@ayo At $dayjob we have an http endpoint that an external company uses, and they scrape it as fast as we respond. When they fo that it hits our limit of conntrack table entries, and we let that happen because it's going to hit some limit anyway

A report card from year 10. It reads in part: English, Grade A, Dana is a very able and talented student who does not always give of her best. This failure to invest much energy in her English prevents her from achieving her full potential although this is not the say that this work is of an inferior standard. Also, Mathematics (Advanced), Grade A, Dana is a keen student but her work lacks discipline. She has a lot of ability but this needs further development.

@ehler @NanoRaptor what if the student is more interested in other activities and would rather be done with the subject you teach as soon as the class ends, so as to focus their time and energy on those other things?
