I write ̶b̶u̶g̶s̶ features, show off my adorable standard issue cat, and give a shit about people and stuff. I'm also @CoderKat.

Yeah. I'm not sure why most people would want to use frankly any of these alternatives beyond a blackout period when they're all mostly worse than Reddit's mobile app anyway. The only things they do better IMO are ads (the official Reddit ads can be really bad) and simply that desire to not give money to Reddit when they're acting like they're currently acting. Neither which are frankly going to convince the average person.

But I mean, the site doesn't have much content nor an app (or comparable quality mobile site). These sites aren't without merit, but to actually stand a chance of actually replacing reddit takes a lot.

Operating costs are something I worry about a bit as a user. If there's nothing or nothing obvious enough, the site will just die because it will become too expensive. Surviving off donations for the sake of donations is possible, but it's hard. I mean, Wikipedia is a household name and it still has to beg for donations with massive, guilt tripping banners.

And Reddit Gold gave some perks I think perhaps from the start? I forget the exact details of what it was like when it was first introduced, but at the very least, its biggest usage was as basically a "super upvote". It wasn't just to donate to the site, but also to inform someone that a post or comment they made was really good. I think it may have also given a short period without ads?

That was hands down the funniest moment for me. Felt like the entire theatre was bursting with laughter.

Does it work, though? I tried it out by subscribing to various magazines of Lemmy and Beehaw, but when I switch my front page to "subscribed", it still only seems to show kbin magazines.

I've seen other comments that mention it's perhaps purposefully turned off for performance reasons, but it does raise the question of if the whole federation idea even matters if it can't scale to even whatever fraction of users actually switched to this site. TBH, I personally don't care about federation and think it just overcomplicates things, but it is confusing that the site has some things that act federated and other things that don't (like the fact you can manage to find your way to posts from other instances, but can't actually make them show up in your front page).

What I'm not super clear on though is if there's mixed zoning. I can't really tell what the 6 (!) different levels of residential density are. I really hope at least one of them is mixed zoning. It's by far the #1 feature I want and I know it's not just me. I want to design super walkable cities dammit!

I suspect that no, we're gonna lose some features. I haven't played enough Paradox games to know how they handle direct sequels, but the Civilization series has this exact problem. Each new Civilization game drops some features, usually DLC features. But despite doing so, I'd say every Civ game really does improve on the prior one.

It's just really hard to preserve all existing functionality while still being able to change the engine and major fundamentals. To keep all features would take either a ton of work or limit the game to some of the same limitations of the first game (due to inability to fix the fundamental problems that may require an expensive rewrite).

I love pizza too much and am perhaps too fast at ordering it when I shouldn't. If anything, I need something holding me back.

Kinda wish my taste buds were the type that liked, I dunno, fruit. It's not like I hate fruit, but it's just... Not hitting the spot like pizza.

Or the acronyms/initialisms that require you to have an in depth knowledge in the narrow field that the code is for... Or straight up be a mind reader.

Yeah, sure, return the ft filtered to the ptl. I don't mind reading the rest of the code to maybe get an idea on what those things are.
