How do people find good information on the internet these days?

It used to be that you would do a search on a relevant subject and get blog posts, forums posts, and maybe a couple of relevant companies offering the product or service. (And if you wanted more information on said company you could give them a call and actually talk to a real person about said service) You could even trust...

gregging,

Don’t stick to one channel. Don’t get your news from social media, because social media is an echo chamber.

Use an RSS feed aggregator app to consolidate boring news articles from multiple boring publications. This will give you an even spread.

You will see the same news stories from different news outlets with different spin. You will quickly come to understand various news publishers biases and how extreme they are.

Always go into an article with an understanding of the publishers biases that might be at play.

If you must do the news on social thing… Only use social to discuss stories you already understand to some degree. Or as a place to research the news topic deeper.

For the most part, just use social to hang with your communities… you know… like a social network :)

angelsomething,

I personally use perplexity.ai and, although not perfect, the way it goes about finding he answer makes it much less prone to hallucination-answers.

chumbalumber,

It depends on the context and the motivation. The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, for instance, I’d argue was a success – it halted any momentum the reconciliation movement had at the time, and led to the situation we’re in today. Would talks have broken down anyway? Who’s to say.

By contrast, the assassination of JFK, though the purpose is unknown, allowed Johnson to galvanise his party in support of a raft of measures.

I actually paid for Reddit Premium about as long as I remember it being around. I cancelled the instant they announced the intent to paywall and censor the API.

I’m generally fine with paying for services I use and enjoy, if I consider the price reasonable. I spent a lot of time on Reddit and considered it reasonable for avoiding ads.

They’ll never see a cent from me again, not from ad revenue or otherwise. I blocked Reddit’s URLs on my PiHole just to be sure.

What online games can be played by 2 users?

I have an online friend from the other side of the globe. We met in chess.com. But I’d like to try a different game this time. We are not console gamers, but have smartphones. Are there any online games we can try for free that can be played real-time? Looking for something light and can be played in the phone browser.

thefool,

www.boardgamearena.com has a bunch of board games, if you’re into that. I’ve played a bunch using my phone, and it works just fine.

A number of games require a premium membership, but there’s quite a few that are free

What are good sources of PS2 files?

My main interest is the preservation of media history. To that end, I am looking for a good source of PS2 files so that I can catalog and archive them into a dedicated USB HDD. Then I’ll store the drive in the random nuclear fallout shelter the house I bought came with until the day the world needs a copy of ‘Little Britain:...
