This was common advice for parents in the 80s and 90s. If someone had to pick me up from school unexpectedly my parents gave them a code word to tell me to let me know it wasn't a child abduction

Game of Thrones was nearly "destroyed" by pirates illegally streaming HBO content (www.forevergeek.com)

At first this article reads like your typical anti-piracy screed. It rants about how 10x more people watched GoT illegally (confusing them with lost sales) and ends with how downloading movies can get your credit card stolen....

Radio stations in the US don't have to pay artists for playing their works for money. They claim that this provides free advertising which increases record sales.

Not sure why this works for music and not other forms of media.

The US is one of four countries in the world - including Iran, China, and North Korea - that doesn't force radio stations to pay artists royalties for using their music to make money. Seeding a torrent doesn't even make money.

Twitter's ad revenue is down 50%. Maybe it's doing some kind of crash diet and living its best life but most people wouldn't call that thriving.

I don't think Biden will intervene in this case. It's one company that's going on strike, not a whole system of transportation. The economic impact will be significant but limited, as there are others that will pick up what slack they can.

Of course, this means that to preserve the right to strike we need to break companies up so they're not too big to fail.

A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out" (privacy.thenexus.today)

When Meta launched their new Twitter competitor Threads on July 5, they said that it would be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon, and all the other decentralized social networks in the fediverse "soon"....

I reminded of the end of season 1 of Foundation, where the Foundation stayed hidden from the empire for a long time, growing in strength and technology.

Season 2 is pretty good so far

Local elections have a lot more impact on your quality of life, and there's usually at least one every year.

The key to voting, as shown by the Evangelicals managing to overturn Roe, is to do it consistently. Every primary, every election, for decades. Unfortunately that's what it takes to effect change in our system of government.

Agreed, but state elections can also allow malicious actors to overrule federal mandates, like Medicaid. Besides, if you vote in every election you vote in the federal ones, too.

Walmart employees get a ton of welfare money but are still mistreated. It would be better for the workers if they had a say in how the company was run, rather than getting their employment subsidized by tax money.

What are the hardest hitting, aggressive songs you know about? (www.youtube.com)

Dear community, often, when people mention they listen to “hard music”, I just don’t feel the energy in what they show me. Many times I get to hear just monotonous, noisy, wannabe-hard sounds, but they fail to “transport energy” to me. I am looking for absolute bangers, no matter the genre. Pretty much the pinnacle of...
