When I was a kid, I spent a few summers living nearby a sunflower field. At the end of the season, snatching a flower with some friends and munching on those seeds was the best thing ever :)

We would often roast them over a bonfire holding the flower by its stem.

They do, and here I was going to add “but they’re a bit less fun”, but after reading the wiki article I’m not sure.

Due to their effects and symptoms, Datura species have occasionally been used not only as poisons, but also as hallucinogens by various groups throughout history. Traditionally, their psychoactive administration has often been associated with witchcraft and sorcery or similar practices in many cultures, including the Western world. Certain common Datura species have also been used ritualistically as entheogens by some Native American groups.

Weren’t these “real people, not actors” actually actors? I remember reading about these ads catching a lot of flak for that some time ago.

It was his in the 00s and he bought it back in 2017, as some article mentioned earlier.

Greece can’t seem to catch a break. This is now what, a fifth island/region to be engulfed in wildfires?

And their hottest month of the year is usually august :(

Benefits of smoking cigarettes?

My girlfriend has threatened to break up with me several times now unless I cut down to a pack a week. I’m not addicted but it does help me get through my day. I keep trying to tell her that but she doesn’t believe me and keeps saying that it’s actually bad. I want to prove to my girlfriend that smoking cigarettes is...

Read Allen Carr’s Easy Way. It’s not a great piece of literature, but it’s the best book to help you wrap your head around why you smoke and whether you actually want to.

Can’t recommend it enough.

fearout,

Ok, you have to be trolling. Are you? No one uses “I could quit whenever I want to right now but I’ll just do it later” seriously.

fearout,
fearout avatar

There. Are. None. Sorry, but you won’t find any.

fearout,

And what makes you think that exactly?

fearout,

Sawing off your leg or getting tapeworms also helps you lose weight. I wouldn’t call those benefits tho.

I started smoking when I was 15.

A while later, someone gifted that book to me. I barely started it and put it away, and it was lying around the appartement for 2 years. One day I randomly picked it up and finished it that day. Went from ~20 cigarettes a day to 0 overnight. That was like 13 years ago, and I never wanted a cigarette since.

That 90% success rate seems to be the case within my friend group as well :)

You weren’t lying :)
Is there an /AccidentalWesAnderson somewhere within the Fediverse?

I think that expanding it to allow for custom blocking patterns will make it more appealing in general. Like being able to add your rich_person_of_choice to the list or the ability to block a company (Meta anyone?) might both be useful features.

Not sure if it fits your plans though or how hard it’s going to be to implement.

How many people do you usually have in your bed?

It shouldn’t be weird. But since it has been weird in the past, it now has to be weird for a little longer to stop being weird in the future.

Treat it something normal and destigmatized and it will soon become that.

I saw this article posted in another thread and it seems to explain a lot. Not sure how close it is to reality, but it looks like nostalgia is at least a partial reason for this change.

Yep. Fucking nostalgia.

Man Found Guilty of Child Porn, Because He Ran a Tor Exit Node (The Story of William Weber) - LowEndBox (lowendbox.com)

William Weber, a LowEndTalk member, was raided by Austrian police in 2012 for operating a Tor exit node that was allegedly used to distribute child pornography. While he was not arrested, many of his computers and devices were confiscated. He was later found guilty of supporting the distribution of child pornography through his...

Btw, what’s the current judicial status of exit nodes around the world? Why was he charged, yet the isp wasn’t? Would the isp be charged if it ran a similar exit node, or is it strictly because it was a private entity?

None of which is surprising really (I’m referring to everything mentioned here, from age to tech-mindedness and left-leaning views). It takes at least some technical knowledge and somewhat noticeable preference for FOSS-like stuff to bother with joining alternative platforms.

Not saying it’s not easy, kbin is pretty much identical to other social media in terms of sign-up simplicity. But you have to actively want it to pursue it. And a lot of people don’t want to get into that, since media outlets and even random users have been whining about how hard it is to wrap your head around fediverse.

I’d guess we’ll see more activity going forward. The general sentiment takes some time to catch up.

In light of articles all over Lemmy about Google pushing ManifestV3 onto Chrome and the majority of web users, isn't that an antitrust violation? (www.ftc.gov)

So as I understand it, Google’s using it’s monopoly market position to force web “standards” unilaterally (without an independent/conglomerate web specification standards where Google is only one of many voices) that will disadvantage its competitors and force people to leave its competitors....

Not sure about the legality of this stuff in the US, but I’d venture a guess that EU will step in sooner rather than later. Might be a good idea to start bothering whatever representatives you can get ahold of.

Reddit Refugee here venting

I’m in the post-ban blackpilled mode right no so please forgive me. I know reddit is falling apart but it isn’t happening fast enough. Is there any hope that the whole site will be destroyed? I really just want the whole site / app completely destroyed and thew Vichyite mods unable to have their power trips anymore.

fearout,

It’s too big to actually die. Like, even Digg is still somewhat around.

But my guess is I’ll continue to enshittify itself as time passes and will probably exist for quite some time as a husk of its former self. It’ll still have a lot of users, but it will lack a lot of content and the sense of community it once had.

fearout,
fearout avatar

Haven’t heard about that one. In what capacity does it plan to join? Something Instagram-like, similar to pixelfed?

fearout,
fearout avatar

Yep. And then opening threads in those communities looking for new mods. But the overwhelming majority of replies seem to be either trolling or giving them shit. Whatever few people volunteer are heavily downvoted, and a lot of those are either powermods moderating dozens or hundreds of subs, or people you do not want to have as mods anyway. So whatever thoughtful and insightful moderation there once was seems to be in heavy decline.

On Coining a New Term

Edit: alright I'm sticking this up here because a number of people seem confused--this post isn't trying to convince you that "fediverse" is a bad term--rather it's a discussion of why I think "threadiverse" is a good umbrella term, for the forum-based part of the fediverse specifically. (lemmy+kbin)...

That’s an oddly poetic way to shit on Threads :)
