Apparently this website doesn’t like mp4s, I tried uploading a gif but it just gets coverted to mp4 too

AFAIK this is actually what most sites do internally (converting it into a webp or mp4 or whatever). Discord does this too, it’s just not as hidden on this Lemmy instance.

try hosting an apng, webp, webm, or something. newer formats that are less popular but hopefully have better compression and still hopefully supported by lemmy.
