Defence Minister Bill Blair says another company of soldiers is being deployed to Hay River in the Northwest Territories, which has been evacuated for more than a week due to a threatening wildfire nearby.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Soldiers are not firefighters. These natural disasters are here to stay and it is time to build a federal emergency task force that can be deployed to fight fires, sandbag cities in prep for floods, evacuate locals on the fly to get them out of danger's way, provide coordination and planning for municipalities, and so on.
It is a sad state of affairs when the USA is further along in implementing a federal service like this, but they are: The U.S. National Response Team. With all the wildfires, I'm hoping this also is discussed at the cabinet retreat this week.
