I have a vintage computer from the late 80s that is way too slow with SSL. Google is the only search engine I know of that doesn't automatically switch to SSL. I've tried:
startpage.com
Ecosia.org
DuckDuckGo.com
Only duckduckgo stays with http when I specify it, but it's very slow loading what appears to be excessive JS (for my system, at least).
I'm about a month late & you may have already found a solution, but have you tried DuckDuckGo's html page? No Javascript, so it would remove the issue of excessive scripts. http://duckduckgo.com/html or http://html.duckduckgo.com/html may work for you
