OC Kicking off the new magazine for Dwarf Fortress

I'm migrating here from Reddit, and one of my favorites subs was always /r/DwarfFortress. Since that doesn't exist here yet, I'm going ahead and creating it! We'll kick off with a classic question: How long have you been playing Dwarf Fortress for? I started back in 2008, and I always come back to this wonderful game! It's been a heck of a ride watching the progress of this amazing game. It's always felt like the game I always wanted to play. How about you?

I have played 0 hours but I will follow this magazine because I do want to play someday lol. Love Rimworld and I know that was inspired by Dwarf Fortress so I'll probably hop on eventually.

@TabbyCat With the Steam version, it's never been easier to get started, since there's the improved official tileset, the MUCH improved UI, and I believe even starting tutorials (which I skipped because I've been playing FOREVER). If you can afford the coin, I'd say go for it! :)

I'll make sure to buy it sometime this year. Looks like a lot of fun, I just have other things to buy first.

If adventure mode is out for the steam version when you get around to it then that might be an ideal entry point

Lells,
Lells avatar

@nanoobot I'm excited to see adventure mode, hopefully it gets some performance gains. It's always fun to find your old forts in it.

I am super pumped for it. I've been waiting for years to do a robinson crusoe style island survival game with it.

Lells,
Lells avatar

Oooh, hell yeah, I like that idea. I haven't actually touched Adventure Mode since like... .40 maybe? Since before you could build and stuff... you can build and stuff now right?

nanoobot,
nanoobot avatar

Yeah me too, I think you can build a ton now. Not sure if you can build/use workshops though. Hopefully there'll be even more expansions as it gets added to steam.

This magazine is of the highest craftsdwarfship. It menaces with spikes of kbin and fediverse. :D

On the magazine is an image of dwarves in pixels. The dwarves are travelling. This relates to the migration from Reddit to the Fediverse.

Kindymycin,

I played for the first time in 2008 as well! Played hard for the next 4 years of undergrad then laid it down for grad school, got back in for a couple of years in 2016-2017, then life got busy. I haven't bought the steam version yet, but when I saw it coming out last year it looking like the dwarf fortress i always wanted! Can't wait to start playing again!!!

I started playing around 2006. I dropped off sometime in 40d and came back to buy the steam release. I can’t recommend it enough.

ScrumblesPAbernathy,

I've been playing since 2016 off and on. I've really been enjoying the steam release. I love make soap and pig tail clothes. Everything else in my fortresses are just buttressing for my goal to clothe the world in fine raiment.

pixelpusher220,

Fairly new to . Picked it up with the Steam release but really amazed at the shear depth of, well, everything! It's a rare thing to see someone's OPUS get the rewards and accolades it deserves and it's really cool to see

Stiqy,

Yup, since 2008.... been a bit slow getting into steam release, but slowly getting used to the new muscle memory for the UI. Hope they get some better citizen viewing/management in soon though.

I dabbled prior to the Steam release, and bought it on launch. I've only clocked 31 hours on Steam so far, and I really need to get back into it, too many games, too little time!
I came in after binging on Rimworld, so I think I ended up burning myself out a little on the colony management genre, but I regularly kept up with the subreddit and various YouTubers (love Kruggsmash's series).

Whilst there are a million things that sell him for me, I really appreciate how he'll always have at least handful of dwarves he's following throughout any given series, watching them develop, and the mishaps they get into. I came into the game thinking "how am I going to remember who everyone is or what they've been doing, this is too much to keep track of".. But keeping an eye on that one dwarf that somehow took down 3 zombies solo, unarmed, in the fortress' first month when you only had 7 other dwarves, watching them rise to fame within the fortress, lose their lover, see their cat fall over the edge of a waterfall, then go off the deep end and become the fortress drunk... Fantastic.

I would say he's playing it in the manner that Tarn and Zach envisioned: As a story generator. And the stories he weaves are masterpieces because of exactly what you mentioned. You don't need to know EVERY dorf, but by Armok there's going to be some that you will keep your eye on if you're paying attention.

Lordofheaven,

I have played seldom now, but I think first time I tried Dwarf Fortress was in 2015ish. Vargskelethor Joel showed the way.

Thanks for making this magazine! Can't wait to see more content.

Started around 2009, I remember in high school when minecraft was first coming out and everyone thought it was like the second coming of Jesus and I was just sitting over here like "how is this better than dwarf fortress"

Lells,
Lells avatar

@Stopkilling0 It still boggles my mind, despite living through it, that there was a time before Minecraft, and that DF still came first.

@someRandomRedneck I think the 0.31 was the circa 2008-2009 I started in as well.

    BadgerBaconSoup,

Thanks for setting this up. I'm not sure that I'm ready to delete my reddit account yet, but I'm seriously contemplating it. If this site proves to be a success, I'll continue on here.

You're welcome, I'm excited to see where this all goes! I love the idea of a decentralized internet, so whether Reddit gets it together or not, I'm probably in for the long haul.

I tinkered around with DF in collage around 2017-2018, though it was hard to get into back then. Since the premium version on steam came out its been a lot easier to play though.

I always played with graphical tilesets even back in the early days, but I also bought the Steam version too. The tileset on that is definitely a ton better, and the UI improvements make a huge difference to the accessibility as well.
