Note to self:

Do not try to pull more than the rated current from a cheap Chinese Solar Charge controller's USB output.

Even if it's just 60mA...

Closeup of the charge controller's PCB showing the IC U6 sporting a nice smelly burn mark.

Does anyone know what that chip could be - I'm having trouble finding anything...

    @axwax microchip 8 bit processor pic12c509 ?

    @axwax Maybe XL1509? Seems to jibe with the pinout: https://www.xlsemi.com/datasheet/XL1509-EN.pdf

    @jaseg Ooooh, thank you - that looks very promising! 😍

    It has got the 4x GND at the top of the pic and current rating, VIN and output pins match too.

    Although... "Built in current limit function" and "Built in thermal shutdown function" 🧐

    @axwax I have cooked more than one of their chips myself before. Some of them are rather robust, others are not. Overall I wouldn't rely on their built-in limits, especially when the chip has less heat sinking than XLSemi might have wanted (as seems to be the case in your solar controller).

    @jaseg Maybe I should just cut my losses and get a new controller. 🤔

    It came bundled with a 2x80W panel, and always seemed to underperform compared to one of the super-cheapo controllers I've used before, even though it has all fancy-pants XT60 connectors rather than the usual screw terminals.

    Anyway, I guess there's not much point in replacing the chip - I've definitely got more trustworthy USB outlets that I can use instead...

    @axwax If it's not that one, I'm sure it's some other XLSemi part. XLSemi is a big Chinese manufacturer of various switchmode regulator chips, and all their part numbers start with "XL".
